When is the last time the Ags had an offensive WR advantage over the secondary, from both a quality and quantity perspective at the same time? We've had great WRs over the years, but rarely has our team lined up with 3-4 studs at the same time / same play. This level of talent and depth that we're acquiring should hopefully open up a significantly higher number of deep balls next year, as well as open up our running game since the secondary will be struggling to keep up with the speed and depth on the field.

and generally speaking...

during the Sherman and Sumlin era...2010 to 2016...A&M had excellent (and several future NFL) WR's

not a coincidence that A&M also had a pass-heavy offense in those years as well

I'm talking about more than 3. Will we have a group of 6-8 that can continually rotate in with fresh legs, run deep routes and take the secondary with them, so that the RBs or Reed can run? And legitimately keep the secondary running with them so that they get tired as the game proceeds.

2012 - Mike Evans, Ryan Swope, Jeff Fuller.

215 - Josh Reynolds, Speedy Noil, Ricky Seals-Jones (you can definitely argue that the group underperformed, but going into the season was considered one if not the best receiver core's in the country)

Still 2011.
Fuller, Swope, and Evans were the standouts. In addition to that we had Nwachukwu, Askew, and Kennedy.

Rattley played in the NFL for a while too. Speedy I think got some time in camps but never made a roster or practice squad.
Any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

Evans (and JFF) redshirted in 2011. Fuller's last season was 2011. The 2012 season included Evans, Swope, Kennedy, EZ, Kenric McNeal, and Thomas Johnson (for half the season). Also on the roster were Derel Walker, Travis Labhart, Ed Pope, and Boone Niederhofer (famous for his sideline dancing).

We're solid at the RB position. No reason to not have a balanced attack. But that doesn't mean predictable running/passing downs by Klein.

19 TD passes in 11 games

Knight had a good season

the problem in 2016...the defense faded in the second half

Knight was great until he got hurt. That would have been a much better season if he was healthy the whole season

A better question is when was the last time Klein coached a QB who threw for over 300 yards in a single game.

It's wild that whenever we hired the "offensive mastermind" in 2017, our passing offense has never been the same. I feel as if he put a curse on A&M's WRs.

Doesn't matter how good of WR's we have if the OL doesn't continue to show progress.

I would say it still matters. More explosive WRs could have kept us from getting shut out against texas, or given us a better chance to keep up with SC, made a play or 2 that could have changed the game against ND, or put us over the top against Auburn. Even with the same OL they definitely could have added a win or even 2.

Either way, back to the OL. I think it's reasonable to expect they will improve. This is the closest comparison to the 2020 OL I have seen. And 2024 was better than 2019. 2020 ended up 1A and 1B with Bama for best OL in the country that year. We are looking at a couple of OTs to potentially fill out the OT depth chart should we lose someone, But I think we only take one if we do lose a guy. The OTs seems to be wanting a more clear path to playing time that as of now, we can't offer.

2019: First year under a new OL coach. Really struggled and were a below middle of the pack OL in the sec. Returned 5 guys with starting experience including a RSR, SR, SR, SR and SO.

2024: First year under a new OL coach AND a new OC. Struggled some, but were actually a slightly above middle of the pack OL in the sec. Return 7 different guys with starting experience including RSR, RSR, RSR, RSR, RSR, RJR, and JR.

On paper, 2025 looks more promising than 2020 did. Was better in 2024 and return even more depth/experience/age overall.

Upgrading a position ALWAYS matters and helps take strain off other positions shouldering the load. Better WRs open up a lot, make things easier on our QB, could help our run game with less safeties coming up in the box, add explosive plays to our offense, etc.

Colin Klein Net Passing yards per game as a coordinator
KSU 2018 - 162
KSU 2019 - 180
KSU 2020 - 185
KSU 2021 - 199
KSU 2022 - 210
KSU 2023 - 241
A&M 2024 - 203

For reference the horns were 281 this year and 289 their last year in the B12.

If you are expecting an explosive pass game with Klein it's probably better to re adjust those expectations. He did show growth over his career at KSU but never coached what many would consider a prolific passing attack.

I would add that this stat is irrelevant if we win just something to consider when we are blaming WR and QB for lack of productivity.

RSJ was never used to his ability level while here. I wouldn't say he was a major part of our offense. Either a late bloomer into the NFL or we misused him.

I don't disagree with the premise that Klein and passing offense is still an unknown with the data we have. I would also say it's important to note that I'm not sure he has ever had an NFL QB or WR. If he has, someone can correct me, but I certainly do not see any high end draft picks.

We'd have to change that so far constant variable to determine that. Plus Klein has only been an OC for 3 years. He did not call plays until 2022. He was listed as co-oc for one season in 2018, but then removed. Not sure how many people get judged off their first couple of years as a position coach. He still has a ton of room from growth and we have little data to begin with.

I still expect him to run a balanced offense that relies on the run game, but the passing numbers can improve dramatically with talent. Only time will tell.

I'm not saying he was a MAJOR part of the offense, but he did have 1442 career yards receiving here.

That would be 550+ more career yards than anyone we have on campus right now. Noah Thomas at just less than 900.

AND, having a run-oriented offense with our top two RBs (Moss & Owens) returning from season ending injuries (meaning we don't know what we have) is a recipe for a disaster.
