A few of the narratives from this season that I disagree with.

1) WRs aren't very good. - Let me start by saying drops cost us the Auburn game. One of those drops was by a TE, and the other was by the QB on the snap. (yes I'm calling that a drop. IT never should have gotten to overtime) Here are my thoughts, CW was just bad this year (minus the Missouri game) His constant inability to throw on time and trust the play led to his troubles. Jump to a whole new freshman QB who started a few games then was benched then was given the starting job for good. They didn't exactly open up the playbook for him. Especially in the t.u. game. My point to all this is, it's hard to build continuity with all of these variables. I liked our WRs. Thomas is a beast. The catch he made in the endzone at Auburn was amazing.

2) I'm sure this is just me, but Nick is an elite DE. I just don't see it. I mean he is good and an amazing young man. I just don't see the "High first round" type of play that I was expecting from all the chatter. Can he affect the play? Sure! I guess with all the talk I was expecting a few more sacks and to see him dominating folks. I never really saw that. Looks like a fast DT to me.

3) We need a New OC! I get it. In the t.u. game, play calling was not very good. Our O-line getting abused was the problem. Should have made adjustments. I do like his scheme, I do like the way he uses motion and plays early to set up stuff later on. Not saying he is perfect, but I am excited to see what year 2 can be.

I don't think our WR corps this year was bad, but it was certainly limited. We do not have anyone who is a real threat to stretch the field or anyone with elite speed. Hopefully, the addition of Jerome Myles, Micah Hudson, and whoever else we add gives us a boost.

Strongly disagree with 1. The WR group last year was devoid of NFL talent. We need a group of WRs that are NFL prospects to make SEC defenses respect our passing game.

If WRs can't create separation, OL provide time, and the QB spot open routes and deliver on time, then your passing game is going to suffer.

Elite Dline play. A play or two here and there, but incredibly inconsistent. Elite Dline play isn't inconsistent.

NIL needs to spent on the Maroon Goons.

Then the DL

Then LBs

Then skill positions.

Disagree on all 3. Receivers did not play well and were rarely open. Wes welker, Julian Edelman, and others like this got open by running pristine routes. They aren't fast, fast but they get open. We had no one like that. Thomas is good at the deep ball and jump ball, so he doesn't need to be that "just get open" guy. But we had no one behind him. CW didn't play well, but the primary reason for Reed playing better was the defenses need to defend against his legs.

Scouts that watch tape will disagree on Scourton. If you don't know how the defense is called, it's very difficult for you to get a feel for how effective a DL is or isn't.

Klein's offense works with a bruiser at RB, or near precision in the passing game. And it worked from game 2 all the way until Moss went down. After that, his offense was over because of your bullet point #1. I believe Klein's offense can work, and I personally love the attitude of get the yards you can get on each play, but it requires consistency at each position

I disagree on #1 somewhat, as the level of competition we play requires exceptional WR play just to be average. Anything less than that is "bad" for our conference.

Otherwise, I generally agree. Nic seemed very good against non-SEC opponents and flashed at times in-conference, but he was either playing hurt or less than fully motivated by the end of the season (based on the totally scientific measure of comparing # of times I noticed him doing something good to # of time I noticed him doing something bad).

I also am not on the fire Klein wagon yet. He called solid games early in the year and what little tape I have seen later in the year tends to have a lot of guys running free that just weren't picked up by Reed (or Weigman earlier in the season). If nothing else, there seems to be at least strong inverse correlation between increasing OL injuries and offensive success rates. It's at leas

The receivers aren't the problem and Klein isn't the problem (in general). Our problem for quite a while now has been QB play. I do think Reed is improving and he's the best we've had since Mond.

1 agree. We have great players at WR. And we are adding some interesting guys from the portal to help.
2 disagree. Nick was a solid pickup from the portal and helped us a bunch this year. Would I have liked to see him be more disruptive down the stretch? Sure. But I'm glad he was on our team when he strip sacked the Arky QB to end the game.
3 agree but man the play calling in the horn game sure tested my faith on our OC

WR group was a very average college WR group. Didn't do anything at an elite level. Most redeeming quality was probably that they blocked well. No elite speed, and I think at times limited what we could call on offense.

I think Weigman being a complete dud had a much larger impact on the season as a whole than people think. Even when he wasn't in the game. We saw what Klein wanted to do against Mizzou when it all clicked for Weigman. He called an absolute master class of a game. Klein spent the entire spring, summer, and fall building his offense around Weigman, with some work being done for Reed as QB2 in the background. As a result, that's mostly what we saw with Reed in the game was a simplified, almost afterthought of an offense just trying to play to his strengths. As much as we'd like it to be, it's not as easy as just installing new things in an offense. You have 4-5 days to game plan for an opponent. Adding new stuff takes a lot of time and repetition which takes away from the other stuff you're supposed to be working on. I suspect (or hope) with an entire spring, summer, and fall of Reed at QB1 we'll see a lot more from Klein.

My source is Noah Thomas running free on a post route vs the Horns and us not getting him and other guys 50/50 balls that an experienced QB does. If we were throwing those guys the ball and they were dropping it or they were losing contested catches that would be one thing but that's not what happened.

Not just the tu game. Happened all season, and our OC never seemed to key the QBs in on it. I don't think Klein was ready for the SEC. I'm surprised that WR room kept playing so hard, and I think that's due to the culture change Elko brought in. I like this team, and I think they'll get that killer instinct soon.

As far as the Scouton comments about possibly not being elite, watch the tape. Guy is a beast, but he got held almost every damn play in every high stakes game we played this season.

"The SEC is down this year."

No it isn't. Just look at out of conference games against P5 competition. In those games, the Big 12, B1G, and ACC all have losing records. Meanwhile the SEC is sitting at a dominating 13-6.

The SEC teams that just missed the playoff don't have losses to anyone except SEC teams. The fact that the conference cannibalized itself more than usual isn't a sign of weakness.

Noah is a good, solid #2 or 3 WR. He is not a #1. The rest of our WRs would have had a hard time getting on the field for a top 10 team. Maybe Barber or Walker as a back up. Maybe. But no guarantee. Maybe Bussey by years end in a specific role. But not a full time WR.

We needed a massive talent upgrade at the position and are in the process of doing that.

The only thing keeping me off the Fire Klien bandwagon is the fact its obvious and was already known going into the season that the offense was left completely bare by Jimbo. Klien definitely has more of a project on his hands compared to the defensive side of the ball.

Watch "The Film Guy's" review of the AU game and the defense. He points out they (DE) we're being asked to run all kinds of oddball stunts that took them out of plays instead of just playing straight up.

Does the cupboard being bare mean that you have to call runs right up the middle over and over when it was blatantly clear it wasn't working? Just makes no sense whatsoever.

Nick was non-existent the last 3 SEC games. Texas back up LT completely dominated him. Multiple times ending up putting Nick on his back 5-8 yards down field after he drove him backwards. He either quit just waiting for the draft, was injured, or very very overrated.

Nic got dinged up in a game mid season and wasn't the same after.

Not sure if it was a nagging injury situation or he decided to check out in order to preserve himself for the nfl.

Doesn't help that the SEC sent out a memo to stop calling holding on our opponents either.

We finished the year with the #1 offense in SEC play, and that's with having 0 WRs that have the ability to create separation from defenders and going the entire year missing 1 of our 2 best offensive players (Leveon/Reuben)

Klein wasn't the problem.
