Elite QB play usually wins in playoff scenarios these days with explosive modern offenses. However, watch Mahomes vs Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl to see what missing 3 starting OL looks like in a big game.

Which team has the best front 6 for the playoffs this year (QB and OL)?

Kinda hard not to like UGA's fronts, on both sides.

I disagree. Defense wins championships. (Although QB play is still very important).

Look at the last 3 National Champs and where they ranked in total defense:

2023 Michigan #1
2022 Georgia #5
2021 Georgia #1

All 3 of those teams had great offenses that could pass and run the ball at an elite lvl. Not saying defense doesn't win championships, but obviously your best bet is to have both.

I agree best bet is to have both. But if you could only have 1, I want an elite defense. Defense usually always shows up where a good offense might not always show up or have a bad turnover day.

All those teams could run the ball very well but I don't really remember them passing at an elite level.

Really crazy how almost all the top defensive teams made the playoffs or you could make a case that they should be in the playoffs (Bama & Ole Miss)

Tech got elite QB play from Mahomes. Where did that get them?

it's interesting that notre dame ha gotten zero love. strong line on both sides of the ball, good mobile qb

not saying they will win it but i don't know that anyone else has better offensive line, defensive line ,qb combo.

scoring offense:
1 Miami
2 Indiana (playoff team)
3 Notre Dame (playoff team)
4 Boise St (playoff team)
5 Texas Tech
6 SMU (playoff team)
7 Ole Miss

1 Miami
2 Ole Miss
3 North Texas
4 New Mexico

10 Syracuse

Pretty much says scoring counts. Yards - not so much. Only 2 of the top 10 yardage producers made the playoffs, while 7 of the top 10 total defense (yds/gm) made the playoffs.

Defense always has and always will win titles. Its hard to play offense consistently and you need to lean on the defense. Defense translates in all environments but Offense does not. Take a high powered fast offense in freezing weather and it sputters.

interesting, thx for doing the recon.

also interesting that none of the top 5 teams perceived with the higher % chance of actually winning it are in those 10 tens at all.
NDame is closest, with 6th best odds.

Oregon +360
Texas +360
Georgia +500
Ohio State +500
Penn State +550
Notre Dame +700
Tennessee +2500
SMU +4000
Indiana +4000
Arizona State +6000
Clemson +6000
Boise State +6000

Tennessee shoes up on both list. They have a good shot of advancing. Notre Dane is solid front 6 and defense. It will be qb play for both of those two that decides how far they go.

Yeah, I think notre dame has flown under the radar because they have played a schedule without any big games on it and because they lost to no Illinois

But they have been smashing teams since that game

Would not surprise me to see them reach the semis or even the finals

A team with a great offense doesn't always show up in the stats if they also have a good defense. Their play-calling will often be more conservative to drain clock and limit turnovers rather than run up points and yards. Not shocking that playoff teams don't always have the best stats on offense even if they have a really good offense.

But all the top 7 teams that have the best odds are loaded on defense.

Oregon surprisingly has a good defense this year (although they did not look good against PSU). And PSU looked horrible against them.

But Oregon, texas, Georgia, OSU, PSU, ND & Tenn all have pretty darn good defenses and I expect the champ to be one of those teams.
