We should be looking to upgrade in the portal at every position every year. Even quarterback. No one's starting role should be safe. Our players do the same after all. They go to where they feel they will get the most playing time and money.

Look what a qb transfer did for Oregon. I'm positive OU is about to go out and upgrade at qb in the portal. Notre dame got a qb in the portal and they are a playoff contender. We have to start thinking this way if we are going to be yearly contender. We can't get a freshman and wait for him to develop and take his lumps here.

I was baffled last year how almost no one on this forum wanted Cam Ward because everyone thought we were good with Conner.

It's a business now and the minor league for the NFL. These guys are all free agents and we need to run the program like an nfl franchise. Hopefully run it like the chiefs and not the cowboys.

I think some of these players get too comfortable getting paid millions and coast a bit. There should always be a next man up mentality and a fear that someone is coming for their spot

We were running with our hair on fire and Connor was one place we were stable. Of course we thought we were getting the old Connor and not the shell shocked one. This year I am all about getting another QB. I bet Zeno could come in and win the starting spot. You want a QB that can do both and I am very suspect on Reed's passing ability.

Desperately need another experience QB.

Yep. Only time not do to this is if you have actual, verified top level production returning. We don't.

If this guy is playing meaningful minutes next year I'm going to make so much money betting against us. He's the ultimate dink and dunk QB.

If you can find the right fit, sure. However, a lot of guys are transferring for their own reasons, and you have to he careful with who you bring in.

Also, money isn't unlimited, so you have to factor that in as well.

If the NCAA would change the transfer policy back to the way it used to be (you have to sit out a year) this insanity would calm down just enough to make things a little more controllable.

I'm not sure if you even need to recruit high school players. Just reload with the portal every year. With 4th and 5th year players. I wonder what %, of h.s. recruits now finish were they start?

Agree! 1 free transfer but after that you sit a year unless your coach is fired or leaves.

All I can say is Curt Cignetti took this philosophy of grabbing veterans from the portal with meaningful reps, recruiting stars be damned, and turned IU around immediately.

No, Zeno won't single handedly beat Georgia, and probably won't supplant Reed, but he'll be able to execute if Reed ever goes down and will help us win the games we're supposed to win.

No free year. Transfer and sit out a year. Just because your coach leaves or is fired shouldn't give you a free pass. This is just how life works.

Agree we need to use the portal for all positions including QB; just keep in mind Reed was ranked #23 in NCAA QBR so he isn't as bad as some posters think.

And the answer is almost definitely no. You aren't going to sign definite better when you don't have a clear path. Especially at QB.

Reed finished the year as our starter and he put up some strong numbers. No stud QB looking to start is going to want to come here unless we absolutely money whip him. But that means we won't have a bunch of money for other needs which i think are far more important. WR1 and Edge for example.

I think it is mire for experienced depth. Our QB room is super young.

There may be competition but my guess the order of likely starters would be

Reed
O'Neil
Zeno

Are the potential portal transfers given a physical like they do in the NFL and MLB before they're signed?
Also, why after six years he still playing college football?

He is probably getting a nice chunk of cash for his last season he will ever play before going out into the real world. Plus he is from San Antonio and knows being affiliated with Tamu will help him when looming for work.
