To provide some context, let me share my background. I grew up in East Texas, and my older brother went to UT for a year before failing out. He was four years older than me, and as such had a bit of a head start on shaping my perspective of things. You all know all of the things people say, there's no need to get into that...

However, I played baseball at Baylor University, and that experience gave me a different insight into all the Big XII fan bases. In my experience, there was no place more fun to play than TAMU. We were very good in those years, and I had friends on the TAMU baseball team, and while the 12 Man was obviously raucous and cheering for their team, the trash talk towards us was funny and fun with few exceptions.

Texas on the other hand, lost lifetime fans in my family based on how nasty they were to us, player parents, and fans. As a player, it didn't bother me, but they were easily the worst fan base I experienced. Not close and I'm not debating it with anyone.

I raised my kids with Baylor season tickets and they were huge Baylor fans. When the Briles scandal happened, and the way the school handled it, I cancelled my season tickets and all but lost interest in college athletics due to how people placed winning over the awful realities of what was happening on campus.

When my oldest daughter chose TAMU, and still to this day, I said that was the most rebellious thing she ever did. I say that because it was true, but that's because of how good of a kid she is. Over the years, my wife and I have really come to love TAMU, and we are looking forward to our next kid enrolling assuming he gets in.

So here's my perspective. TAMU culturally is infinitely better than UT. I don't need to go into all the reasons, and this is also not debatable to me. The 12th Man is the best fan base as it relates to supporting your team in the gameday environment- no question You all deserve better than you have gotten...

With all of that as context, you guys really need to stop giving people so much power over you. It's so easy to push your collective buttons and get reactions. When you respond that way, it gives people power over you, and while you're all upset, they're laughing. Then, the response to that often leads to behavior that really goes against who you are. I witnessed an Aggie student using the N word in front of a young black Ag while engaging with UT fans. He was obviously embarrassed and mortified by his slip up, but it didn't change the impact of that moment on his classmate. This was one of several exchanges that just made me a bit sad.

I really admire so much about all of you, and I am beginning to understand what it is that you all love so much. I also better understand some of the reaction to you all. I know asking people to be introspective is foolhardy, but I just wish you all had enough confidence in who you are to not respond to the provocation in ways that betray your values.

I fully expect to be flamed for this, but sharing anyway. I'll be rooting for you guys always (except when/if you play my Bears)

This is the root of it. I can't get anyone to formulate a logical answer as to why the league wouldn't want us to win thus giving the league a shot at more playoff teams. All I hear is baaaa, snakey, scary refs, cash cows.

The best way to quit being a victim is to stop acting like a victim.

Good perspective. I knew going in what other fanbases, especially texas felt towards us. While most of my buddies chose t.u., I gladly went the other direction and never have regretted it. The camaraderie and education were worth it. I wear the ring proudly regardless of the scoreboard. I love being an Aggie.

Cannot disagree with a word of that.

I think it will be a fine line, but we really need to shed the "nice people" reputation that we have and cherish so much, but do so in a way that doesn't go against our values. To quote Road House, "be nice until it's time to not be nice."

Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, hear you on not over-reacting to what people do or say.

For me now, the rivalry is more just entertaining and so I just started having fun with it several years ago. A couple of examples are below:

  • Bought a round of drinks for a table of tu fans right after the baseball team beat them in the Regionals this past year. They had been talking trash throughout the game and I just sat there with a buddy and enjoyed getting the chance to watch the game with him- he had health issues and was one of his first times out since then. Bartender wouldn't let me pay for drinks the next time I went there to catch another game.
  • Turning my neighbor's tu flag upside down sometimes when tu lost a football game (Tom Herman and Charlie Strong years). It was hard to keep a straight-face when they would complain about it at block parties.
At the end of the day, it really is just a rivalry. We root for our team while they root for theirs.

Amen; we should really start using even more slurs towards folks of visiting teams!

Ive tried to make this point before. https://texags.com/forums/5/topics/3512001/replies/69177726

This is the absolute biggest weakness of the Aggies. All this "hate" and whatever....its destructive to an otherwise great school and community. Its allowing Lucy to pull the football every time.

The Ags need to rewrite the war hymn and come up with something else for the swaying (saw off).

Its just time to put this down. The good meaningful traditions don't have anything to do with Texas any way.

That's not what I'm talking about. Plenty of Aggies can be foul with their language during games. I once yelled something at a game (when I was much younger and much more stupid) that I wished there was a nearby rock that I could crawl under after those words left my pie hole.

It's more about our welcoming persona that lends itself to the thought that we are pushovers. I mean, the sips literally just walked into our house and did our girlfriends, and we basically said "gee thanks" rather than kick their asses. No, not suggesting violence against anyone. Heck, I don't know what I'm suggesting.

Great post, man. I've tried to say the same thing but was never able to do it nearly as articulately. I grew up a Texas fan, graduated from Angelo State and married a Texas grad. Our daughter proudly chose Texas A&M and we couldn't be more happy with her decision. We've come to love Texas A&M, College Station and the overwhelming majority of Aggies we've gotten to know.

The anecdote about the n-word getting tossed out there is really eye-opening. Sports are a lot of fun, and rivalries make them even more so. But there is a point that things become toxic … like tribalism run amok. We saw some of that play out nationally in Ohio, Florida, elsewhere … (and yes even in Texas).

Better to keep a cool head and try to keep things in perspective. Nobody is saving (or changing) the world by winning a football game. It can be difficult to remember that in the heat of the moment.

Other fan bases wouldn't have power over us if we won. If we were good we could do everything we do an more and it our fans would say "beat us on the field then".

Great post, OP.

Of course, the reason those provocations work is because there is a lot of truth to them. Our years of mediocrity and our constant failings on the biggest stages make us an easy mark, and we absolutely have no answer.

Saturday night was a perfect example.

I once had someone who lives for LSU football ask me if I was an "A&M fan." I said no ... I was an A&M graduate with an actual diploma.

The insults cut deeper when you can't just jump on and off the bandwagon.

Just don't rag on student athletes in a way designed to effectively harm them. It's not funny or a joke. And could be a violation of civil rights which has both a criminal component and a civil liability component.

It's almost like we need anti-harassment classes for our fans…

Were you one of the Baylor ball players that killed Queso the Cat and then skinned it? I know we used to give your team a lot of **** about that, but it was totally deserved.
