Give Coach Elko and Coach Bateman a call about this.
If you defend the edge, who will be left to stop the inside run??? THERE"S NO GLORY HERE. at least the edge has sidelines? also, the front? behind???

Better they do the comeback route than run fast through many holes. It's a lose lose
Elko plays man to man a lot. He also uses his corners to recognize run and contain edge. Year 1 with Elko last time around was much worse than this year. Year 2 improved drastically but it was still a weakness.

It was disappointing to see no adjustments against USC especially considering Elko's reputation of being a defensive wizard. The edge was undefended the whole game. It reminded me of the Torbuh era when opposing players ran wild and free through our defense.
This is a head-scratcher, because it's a relatively simple adjustment. You just don't over-pursue. That's exactly how the teams played that had success against Johnny (go watch 2012 vs. LSU). If you're regularly taking 2 ends out of every play because of their aggressiveness, QB is eating up grass all day.

What adjustments from a scheme perspective were needed? For 3.5 quarters, our defense was in position to completely shut SC down if we could just get the first 1 or 2 guys who got hands on the ball carrier to get them down. I mean, I guess the lack of tackling can be laid at the coaches feet, but at this level they should be able to do that. The coaches put them in the spot to make the play all night that night.
This. I heard somewhere that officially we had something like 25 missed tackles against USC. The question is, does that include where you completely whiff on a guy and don't make contact? Because I thought the count would be much closer to 50 because it was atrocious. I mean we easily should have had at least 6 sacks in the game and we had ZERO.
This is the truth. How many times did we hit the QB or RB behind the line of scrimmage yet they broke tackles for positive yardage? If even half those times we tackle them instead of them breaking free this is an entirely different ballgame. The plays were there we just failed to execute the tackles.
At the 5 minute mark in the 4th quarter we were only down 10 but our drive ended on 4th down and they promptly reeled off two touchdowns in the last 5 minutes. This was a winnable game but credit South Carolina they kept punching us in the face. Hopefully, our players have not forgot what that felt like because it can help with the motivation over the next two weeks.

Defensive end containment has been an issue most of the season. I feel like I've yelled "contain the ****ing edge" at the TV in just about every game. Linebacker play hasn't helped. They just don't seem to have the speed needed to make plays laterally when the RB gets around the DE's. Elko has a nice LB class coming in, but he probably needs to bring in some transfer LB's with some speed to help out.
Agreed, Scooby is our best LB and has good lateral quickness..but we need help there.
We're going to have to defend the dink and dunk and misdirection soon too.

I think most really need to study Elko's run defense and understand responsibilities of each player. Yes, most of the time he does not ask his ends to set an edge. He asks a lot out of corners and safeties.
Many of the big plays this year are either a missed tackle, a problem all year especially at safety, or a gap fit where a player was trying to do too much. There was a play in SC game where the RB went off RT hips. The LB was suppose to fill that gap while the safety had inside gap. LB ducked inside and RB cut out and nobody there. McElroy blamed it on safety but it was actually LB Williams trying to do too much on that play

The DEs will scream upfield like out of control maniacs, and terrible passer Payton Thorne will scramble for almost 100 yards while continually putting our DBs in terrible situations where they have to decide to come up and tackle the QB or stay in coverage. Then, we'll try that stupid safety blitz a hundred times so that Thorne can throw it over Ratcliffe's head 4 to 6 times.
