Should we continue to schedule tough non-conference games?

We should have played a cupcake instead of Notre Dame for the first game of the year. We would be 8-1 and guaranteed to make the playoffs regardless if we win against tu.

If we didn't play with bad Weigman then we'd all be thinking the opposite

ND is probably the 5th best team we will play this year.

Yeah but we don't gain anything from that win. A 10-2 SEC will be in the playoffs. Regardless if you beat ND or alabama state.

For the 2024 season, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) requires that each team play one opponent from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, or a major independent in addition to their eight conference games.

Ags rarely schedule tough non conference games so this was a one off. With that said, yes, with the 12 team playoff it's ok.

Every P4 team should be required to schedule an OOC P4 team every single year.

We'd be top 8 easily right now if we did win and assuming no losses for tu or Ags. It'd be something like a top 5 match up which would mean we are guaranteed CFP

It really doesn't matter because it didn't happen but we should have beat ND. If we did, nobody would ever think twice about it because we'd all be riding so high at this point even if we lost badly to South Carolina last week

It's hard because these games are often scheduled many years in advance, so it can hard to tell if it's going to be a cupcake game or a tough one.

That being said, taking an easy win seems to be more beneficial than risking it with a tough matchup. Look at Ole Miss; they played a easy game against Wake Forest. Even with two conference losses, they'll be in the playoff conversation at 10-2 (6-2). We played a tough Notre Dame, lost, and now two conference losses will put us out of the playoff picture. 9-3 (6-2) won't be good enough.

OP, so you want a OOC schedule consisting of McNeese State, Bowling Green, New Mexico State, and Northwestern State? It sucked to lose that game, but at least we had a great opponent to play, one worthy of the ticket price.

Or take Tennessee. They played a weak NC State team early in the year and won. They dropped a road game to Arky, but may be able to afford a second conference loss (likely to Georgia). We lost our OOC game and cannot afford a second conference loss.

Pay close attention to what's been going on.

All top tier SEC and Big 10 teams are mainly only scheduling ooc games with div 2 teams or teams that are either in the SEC or Big 10 or teams that will be in one of the two conferences shortly.(Uga-Clemson)

Texas played a week Michigan but travels to Ohio State next year. We have home and away with ND and had one with Miami previously. LSU played USC this year and at Clemson next year(which will get into one of the big conferences.)Bama plays Wisconsin and FSU next year.. Ou and Michigan play next year and Ou won't play UofH again like this year. USC obviously plays ND which will be in one of the two conferences soon.

The only outliers this year and next really have been ole piss and Tennessee. But they'll have to add one mid to upper level team in the Big 10 soon which one of them will probably play Oregon ooc.

This is about money now and big games while having a chance to build your resume ooc at least once allowing them to lose twice possibly in conference and still make the playoffs.

No one is scheduling ok state after Oregon game next year, no one is scheduling any ooc games with any non cupcakes that aren't gonna be in one of the two big conferences.

Slowly eliminating the need for anything other than the SEC and the Big 10.

And sucking dry as much as possible financially all of those "left over" teams that think they should be in one of the 2 big conferences. Suck them dry and any remaining tv dollars will only go back to the SEC and the big 10.

It has already been proven the committee does not care about strength of schedule. Being 8-1 absolutely gains you something. We would be top 10 right now, no question.

Better off playing a crappy Big 12 / ACC team instead

They(the big 10 and the sec) are not going to financially support any big 12 or ACC teams ooc within the next few years unless that team has a high likelihood of joining the SEC or Big 10.

It's the slow long play yet as soon as possible to kill all of those mid level big 12 and ACC teams financially to be forced to create a second division in D1 football.

With that game 1 performance, would you really rather have played a bad team? Because that does not mean we would have won

Been saying this for years. There is very little to gain by playing a strong OOC game in this format. If we go 10-2 this year and lose CCG, both Tenn and Ole Miss will get in playoff above us at 10-2. I would argue Texas might as well even though we beat them head to head.

I will ask this question of you. Who do you think will be ranked higher next week? Ole Miss or Georgia? Conventional wisdom says same record and head to head win so it should be Ole Miss, but body of work says Georgia. If it's Ole Miss, then Clemson game meant nothing for UGA.

Play weak P4 OOC. Purdue, Arizona State, or similar.

You'll see some schools trying to schedule the perennial bottom feeders from the other leagues every year

So you are chalking up a loss in the last three games then.

I make no predictions but winning out puts us in Atlanta. Might have to win that to get to the playoff, sure, but we could also squeeze in if losing a tight one. Although I will guess that would be mostly unlikely.

Wish that every conference would get consistent scheduling rules agreed to. It is ridiculous that the SEC only has 8 conference games when most of the other conferences have 9. Even with a 'big' out of conference game it means 3 **** game a year. I understand the economics this year (ESPN wasnt going to pay for an additional conference game so screw em.) I also hate the late 'gimme' game that SEC teams play late in the season. Replace that with a conference game. It sucked when the last home game of the year was against Abilene Christian.
