Didn't we already get that wake up call in game 1, or do we need a wake up call like last night 3-4 times a season?

Trying to justify losing.

False premise/strawman "argument"...,no one has justified the loss. Simply expressing the good that can result from it. It's a teaching/learning moment. It's a young, inexperienced team, coached by a new, developing staff. It'll either get 'fixed', or it won't. I'm with the OP in betting it does.

This loss was an unfortunate much needed wake up call. That performance last night was our team at its absolute worst, from the coaching, to the players, to the basic fundamentals.

It's this loss that will help us recalibrate and refocus to close the season with a win vs sip and momentum heading into the playoffs.

It was a wake up call for the players and the coaches as they enter the bye week to work it out. Elko has learned from his mistakes no doubt, and he knows what needs to be done to fix it.

We get a practice game to work on these things after the bye. Then a struggling Auburn team away to make sure we've got it figured out before the finale. It's all still right in front of us.

If the team wins out, including an ass-kicking bowl game, then, yes, this loss can actually mean something.

My BAS is telling me not to hold my breath, though.

If the team wins out there will be no bowl game. It will be playoffs.

Of course I would have preferred us to win, but if this is the kick in the pants our team needed to get serious for t.u. then I'll accept it.

How can you so confidently say there's no doubt Elko has learned from his mistakes? It's that yet to be seen?

No loss is a good loss, that's coach talk for how to head into the next week with ways to improve...I don't know that we lost to a better football team last night, but I feel comfortable saying we lost to a team as good as us last night in a very difficult place to play. When you take away Moss, we become a very average football team at the skill position....I can remember looking at the size difference last night between our DBs/LBs and their wide outs and backs....Love me some York, he is all heart, but that dude is not very athletic, our safeties are not very athletic compared to SEC wideouts and backs, we struggled big time getting off blocks and tackling in space

In saying all that, Elko has this team playing extremely hard and above their talent level in a few positions, not to mention the fact that our QBs are still literally week to week not knowing who is the man. We are an experiment under a first year coach who is very smart and has done a great job of taking care of the effort and culture of this team, which is where you have to start...There was definitely a lot of talent left over from Jimbo, but not the kind of talent at the skill position that you require to beat a large, tall, physical, athletic team consistently in this league...

I'm not saying we can't beat South Carolina, if we play them in Kyle Field, if we get 4th down conversions, if we clean up the personal fouls, if we tackle through the hips and legs, all of that effects the outcome no question.

What I am saying is this does not surprise me, in my opinion this team has over achieved all season based on the ingredients and it being a first year head coach....I think after this season is over, if we end up with 9 or 10 wins which is very possible under a first year coach in which we added our biggest rival to the mix in the toughest league in college football you have to feel really good about where this program is headed.

If we win out and beat tu at home and have a chance to play in the playoffs, then that's even more reason to be very excited about the future

I know Elko knows this, but we have to continue to upgrade at the skill position, our Dline and Oline are pretty solid and should continue to get better

I'd argue that we needed the W

This wasn't a "needed" loss. This was a level set that we aren't great. We are pretty good, but we aren't elite. This loss likely ended realistic playoff hopes (but just that we had playoff hopes at this point in the season is a positive). The next two games should be wins unless we suck. If we had not lost this game, we definitely make the playoffs if we beat Texas (even losing the SEC Championship) and would have had a chance to make the playoffs if we lose. As it stands, we almost for certain need to win out to make the playoffs. The Texas game is a rivalry and a home game, so there should be a decent chance. If we play Georgia in the SEC Championship, the chances are very low that we win. I seriously doubt a 3 loss team is making the playoffs. Short of winning out, we don't have much of a shot at the playoffs.

That said, if we win the next 2 games, this isn't a bad season no matter what happens. 3 losses is better than many expected. Missouri turned out to be far worse than anyone thought, but we still beat a good, though not great, LSU team. I expected 4 losses. 3 is good in my mind and 2 is way above expectations if we do it. I think the most likely scenario is going 9-3 and then a bowl game (which would mean nothing since any non playoff bowl is now a joke since so many players sit out).

We will win out until LSS. Then, we win that game if we can come into it hyped but not too overheated.

We are better than them i think and more motivated to win.

There is no such thing as a good loss no matter what you say. A bad win also beats a good loss. If this team needs to lose to get focused then they are not a contender for anything.
Well let's just all hope that you're wrong.
That is an absolute fact.......there are no good losses that ever helps a team win!

Losing to get a team focused is never a winning solution.......and never will be.

win lose or draw this loss doesn't effect anything other than potential seeding if we win out. we win our next thee games we're good. so might as well
learn a whole lot from this loss if it was going to happen.

If we'd won, we likely have the cushion to potentially lose to t.u. and still have a shot as a 2 loss team.

Now we're in a spot where we HAVE to win out.

Yep, winning until the tu game afforded us the chance to lose to tu and still be in the playoffs. Not anymore. Some Ags don't understand that.

1. Ags understand that but it seems that some Ags fail to acknowledge that if we win out we still achieve our goals. They'd rather wallow in losing our cushion than embrace what still lies ahead

2. A loss to sip and we aren't guaranteed any playoff spot. Our best wins would be mizzou and lsu and we'd be fighting it out with some other 10-2 sec teams and 1 loss acc/bi12 teams for that final spot. No guarantee at all there

3. A loss to sip at Kyle in the first game between us in 13 years is not an option

Don't recall many great teams, or even really good teams, needing a loss to get a wake up call. Maybe if we lose out, that will be such a wake up call that we go undefeated next year?

Not a lot, but there are a few.
