They picked a good coach...who will get poached sooner than later IMO...but their coffers have been awakened. Much smaller fanbase, but has setup some big time money going fwd to compete and will be a better program than most realize.

Catch-22 as while I hope they somehow stir up ACC (and they had a good setup as think missing Clem and UM this year in regular season), if they do very well, we are now competing vs. a rising Tx College program (already are).

They've had trouble holding onto some top recruiting talent (as a couple top verbals were poached), but a bit of shock and surprise and they will bring back that talent. If they can cherry pick DFW area, more than enough to make them perineal top 25 team going fwd. with this coaching staff.

The Big 12 should have snatched them up and built a division out of the former SWC schools.

SMU should do well in the NIL era.

The bad news is that they will probably win out.

The ACC championship game is going to be interesting, I don't see a clear cut favorite. Might as well be SMU since Clem got rolled by Louisville - who lost bigly to SMU

They beat Duke by 1 point, Nevada by 5 points, Louisville by a touchdown, and they lost to BYU.

They may be ranked higher than us, but I doubt they would be 8-1 if they had Notre Dame, LSU, and South Carolina on their schedule...hell, I don't know how they would do against Florida, Arkansas, or Missouri.

I'm 52. My first time to attend an SMU game in-person was as a freshman in 1990 at Ownby Stadium. I'd left my ticket in my friend's dorm room, and he told me not to worry. Sure enough, the guy checking tickets was reading a comic book, and I walked right past him flashing something about the size of a ticket.

I can remember the Pony Express, but I met very few SMU fans in Beaumont (although my best friend from high school wound up going there).

EDIT - And my maternal grandparents' honeymoon was going to Dallas for the 1936 SMU game. Playing SMU is always nostalgic for me.

All it takes is Ohio State beating Indiana and they might jump into the Top 12 (whichever of LSU or Alabama wins will be in front of them so that game doesn't matter to the Mustangs).

If the Mustangs can beat, checks notes, Virginia (13th in the ACC and 4-4 overall), Boston College (14th in the ACC and 4-4 overall), and Cal (17th in the ACC and 4-4 overall) it looks like SMU is going dancing, to poach a term.

That assumes the Mustangs won't be punished by the committee for having to play in the ACC championship game against Miami, which seems to be the common wisdom.

SEC and Big Ten have made the argument for more access.to the playoffs based on better competition. The SEC never placed a CCG runner up in the four-team playoff. And the conference office had to fight to get the runner up a better bowl game such as sugar on occasion.

I think if you play 2-3 top ten teams just focusing on zero losses when other conference champions play zero should be a deciding factor. Indiana has played none and first ranked team will ge Ohio Stare. SMU played top 25 Louisville and top 30 Pitt and won both.

So I would guess a loss for SMU puts them at risk of being out of top 12. Indiana with one loss likely loses tiebreaker on head to head with Ohio Stste so stats in top 12 without CCG loss.winner of Ohio State and Oregon would get the bye. Oregon with one loss is in. Ohio Stste with two losses is likely in but might be ranked 8-12.
