It has to suck to be in the Aggie Band these days. You march in, and do a halftime drill, and get to play the War Hymn and Spirit of Aggieland and wildcat a handful of times, but have to listen to rap music the rest of the game.

The band still plays, and the DJ defers to them whenever they do play. After the NCAA changed the rules about when bands could play in 1986 (ask the SMU band about that rule), you hear the FTAB a lot less than you used to. I think the mix is about right. They should probably mic the band up a bit so that you can hear them throughout the stadium (it's hard to hear any band if they aren't playing in your direction).

The NCAA may have changed the rules, but in the 70's the FTAB NEVER played while either team was at the line or during live action. At most, a wildcat for a good play. (which in those days was a first down)

That's simply not true. Listen to the 1973 Live at Kyle Field album if you think the FTAB wasn't playing during live action. They didn't do it to disrupt opponents, but like pretty much every other band at the time, they liked to play an entire piece through.

Well, I guess I dreamed those years from 71 to 74. And I'm on that album. Not sure how you can tell from a CD or vinyl album that there is a play in action. There wasn't.

Because you can hear the crowd reaction to a big play on at least one of those pieces. I'm not as old as you; my first A&M game was 1975, but I was in school when the NCAA changed the rule, and can tell you with certainty that it changed the way all college bands operated, including the FTAB.

Whoa, whoa, whoa…I'm also '88 and have a completely different recollection. This was the heyday of the 12th Man Kickoff Team, the origins of the Wrecking Crew Defense, when the coach (God bless Jackie Sherrill) and the football team helped build the hell outta Bonfire and were there when it was lit. Our class was the first one never to be outscored by t.u. This era also started the tradition of the 12th Man Towel and credit to our Yell Leaders, made Kyle Field so loud it shook Brett Stafford (t.u. QB) to his core when he and the t-sips couldn't hear the plays called or snap count over the 12th Man. Kyle field was loud as hell due in large part to a very unified student body, a football coach and team who wrapped themselves in our Traditions, respect for and support of our elected Yell Leaders and an Aggie Band that provided the notable, recognizable and unique pulse at football games that was undeniably signature music of A&M…it was far from being a contest to see which school could fill their stadium with the loudest speakers or the trashiest music d'jour.
To say that the 12th Man of the '88 era (beyond 2 percenters) complained about our Yell Leaders is just not accurate.

I'm of that era. And have endured almost 40 years of disappointment. I need the DJ.

Have corp sit throughout the crowd so we don't constantly look like a military school every time they show the crowd.

Serious question - how hard is it to try to make the yell leaders slightly more relevant/current? For instance - if they did a yell where the crowd says "Somebody light me up….BOOM!" Or something like that. Are they allowed to make up new yells? What's the process? Is there a process? Or are we eternally stuck in the 1940s with rickety rickety chiff chaff?

I guess I'm a old now. I hate rap music, and I think the DJ should be extremely limited to timeouts and when we are on offense.

Just because I hate rap doesnt mean they can play it for the players. We just get WAY WAY too much DJ.

Surprised it took until Page 4 for the truth to come out.

We used to define greatness.

But we gave that up because we want to be like everyone else now.

I like the DJ, adds a great element. Lets just not overdo or over utilize the DJ for noise and "energy".

Texas relies 100% on their DJ during baseball games. Their fan base makes very little noise and they are not very engaged....well at least when A&M comes into town as we have kicked their arse for years in Austin.

It is pretty annoying honestly so I do understand the folks that are DJ thumbs down.

That would push the Aggie Wahibis right over the edge...
