Hope staff gets Jim Turner on the program this week and asks him about the Jahdae Walker targeting. Looked like a textbook block to me! Shouldn't have stood over the defender.

About the only thing I can piece together is
- launch
- upper part of body
- defenseless (wtf?)

Because there was zero crown of helmet, clearly a shoulder shot, the helmets clicked but that was just from how bodies flop after hard contact….and I can't even really call it blind side either.

Little by little, they're taking the legit hard hitting football out of the game of football

To me, it looked like a no-doubter textbook 1990s block and a no-doubter textbook 2020s targeting.

Note for defenseless player, you just need forcible contact to neck or shoulder area. Can be with hands or helmet or shoulder.

The other targeting is leading with your crown. This was not the case here, but it was 100% targeting on defenseless player by the book.

Agreed defender was flat footed but his head was turned toward the blocker. He should definitely have seen Walker coming.

It was a blindside block making him a defensiveless player and there was forceable contact to the head and neck area making it targeting.

Herbstriet said something to the effect of, "Yes, that's a penalty in today's game according to the rules, but that's what you like to see out of your receivers when they block."

ETA: also what vander said.

I remember playing in the secondary in high school in the 90's and can still hear coaches' voices screaming "keep your head on a swivel."

Those days are gone

Since they were facing each other during the contact I disagree. Can't be blindsided if you are facing the guy blocking you. Bad call.

Also it was not targeting. IMO. Only two offense targeting calls I've ever seen both on A&M receivers. First was Ricky seals jones

Yep. And here's how we would have responded in the 90's if we ever heard the term a "defenseless" defender.

Just because a defender has his eyes locked in on the ball (and apparently a disregard for how he's gonna work over to it), that doesn't make him "defenseless".
It does make him a little clueless though.

Set your angle, keep your head on a swivel, and fly to the ball.

He didn't do that 2nd one.

If a defender is in the middle of the field by the play looking towards the backfield and is considered "defenseless" then that defender is doing something wrong.

I understand defenseless and it was targeting...

And Walker brought WAAAAAAAAY to much attention to himself on the play by standing over the DB.

But blindside? I don't see how that was the call? Unnecessary Roughness or whatever, sure. Maybe I'm being too literal - but I cannot believe they called a blindside block. And ABC's rules analyst was slobbering all over the call.....

Defenseless????

Mother ****er was looking dead in his face. These ***** ass officials are very quick to throw a flag on a big hit, whether there was or wasn't a penalty. The "replay booth" should NOT be able to stop the game for any reason other than being summoned to do so by a coaches challenge or an on field official.

And how was it hitting a defenseless player when that player is standing squarely in front of you?

Just because someone gets the hell knocked out of them doesn't mean it's an illegal hit.

What's next? Illegal for pulling OL to kick out the defenseless DE on counter? No down blocking because it's blindside?

You guys are posting like you've never watched college football before. This has been getting called for years. Mike Evans got penalized for this at A&M for goodness sakes!

the rule change went into effect in 2019.

I don't recall the evans play, but it would not have been the same call as this.

at the 45:08 mark on this video, you can see the play

https://texags.com/forums/5/topics/3502644

on the blindside block call, walker is 3 yards in front of the DB, coming from the side where the play is. how in the world is that "initiated from outside the opponent's field of vision, or otherwise in such a manner that the opponent cannot reasonably defend himself"?

bad call IMO.

but on the targeting, once that blindside call is made (which was wrong), the DB is a "Defenseless player." and the hit did meet the markers to be targeting IMO.

tldr, not a blindside block, so also not targeting

The pose standing over the receiver didn't help for sure. It's crazy, but I think what they want now is for the receiver to screen the defender like a pick in basketball, otherwise it's "unnecessary roughness", targeting, defenseless player, etc. In today's world, we can't have players being too physical in football, hitting another player hard, etc. someone might get a bobo, lol.

The blindside was a BAD call but it WAS the call and it's not reviewable.

once the call was blindside block THEN it was reviewed for potential targeting and by rule he's defenseless at that point. If it was reviewed for targeting WITHOUT the blindside block call, he's not defenseless, and the standard for targeting is different.

It all stems from the bad blindside block call

Funniest part is that it happens 3 feet away from the Umpire who calls nothing. It was the Back Judge (?) that called it.

It's the SEC. To beat blue bloods, you have to also beat the zebras…and Birmingham.

Walker standing over the defender was badass. I'll take the penalty just for that. Great Getty photo opp. FAFO at Kyle Field

Back was turned to Jahdae's therefore defenseless. No crown required.

In hindsight knowing we won, that's easy to say.
You can't do that **** in pivotal moments of meaningful games, because the little things matter and eventually will bite you

Turner's shot into Nussy the Hussy was a dip**** move too.
