Hot take, but Reed will probably never be better than a serviceable college backup. If the late Mike Leach is to be believed, there's no way to teach accuracy, Reed's primary issue.

Seems like our best bet post-Weigman is going to be O'Neill, Longstreet, or Casuga.

Would love to be proven wrong about Reed though, dude's been a warrior for us. Just not a super effective one

The ND version of Conner vs The Fla version of Reed=Reed far better

The Mizzou version of Conner vs the Arky version of Reed=Conner far better

The higher ceiling going forward=Conner

The lower basement going forward=Conner

Who do I want to start vs Miss St=Conner

For chissakes. We have a former 5-star QB prospect playing well as an upperclassman, and are in the top 15 with a decent shot at 10 wins and/or an appearance in the SEC Championship.

But sure, let's entertain pointless "should we play the talented underclassman backup because potential?" hypotheticals.

THIS really is and really should be END OF THREAD!

We have two very good QBs and an even better coach to make a decision.

Stats be damned (especially those that are not in all cases apples-to-apples), Weigman is by far the better quarterback at this stage. He did not play up to his usual standards and had a bad game against Notre Dame. If that becomes a trend I'm all ears, but so far it looks to me like an outlier.

I like Marcel, and I think he's about the best you can expect in a QB2 these days given the portal, but his at-best inconsistent ability to pass the ball accurately makes a us a more one-dimensional offence. I'm among those that think that will bite us on the ass if he is not able to improve in that regard and for whatever reason becomes QB1.

This reminds me of the Mond days.

"If X Mond shows up instead of the Y Mond, then we'll win this game!"

Except for Y Weigman has shown up once. Ever
Was it the once vs top 10 Missouri or the once vs top 5 LSU?

Honestly you could include the 2022 #15 Ole Miss game. He balled out in that game too

I think he's saying we've only ever seen bad Weigman once (ND) and you guys are actually in violent agreement?

Let's count great games against ranked oppenents

#9 Missouri - 2024
#5 LSU - 2022
#15 Ole Miss - 2022

Now lets look the games he put up great stats against non-ranked oppenents

UNM - 2023
ULM - 2023
McNeese - 2024

So thats 6 great games and he's only played in 12 but one of those was Auburn 2023 where he was i jured early and didn't return.

Plus he's probably only had 2 bad games, ND 2024 and his first time playing South Carolina 2022.

Reed could definitely improve his accuracy by ironing out his throwing motion.

I am saying bad Weigman has shown up once. Coincidentally, it was when he was injured. Maybe, just maybe, that was the cause.

Both QBs have played three games:

Marcel Reed:
ESPN Rating: 141.7
Passing Yards: 585
Rushing Yards: 226
Total Yards: 811
Total TDs: 8
Total Turnovers: 0
Wins: Arkansas (Neutral site), Bowling Green (Home), Florida (Away)
Losses: 0

Connor Weigman:
ESPN Rating: 129.8
Passing Yards: 501
Rushing Yards: 98
Total Yards: 599
Total TDs: 2
Total Turnovers: 2
Wins: McNeese (Home), Missouri (Home)
Losses: Notre Dame (Home)

It's key to mention Weigman only played home games though he played the best two teams on the schedule (ND/Missouri both remain the only ranked teams). He also played the weakest by far in McNeese. Reed only played one game at home. I rank the strength of schedule as a wash but that is debatable based on how your perceive the home field advantage and the strength of the teams.

Who is the better QB?

The stats favor Marcel Reed as the better QB if you look at his 3 game performance (especially being 3-0 as a starter with zero turnovers). He is also younger and less experienced so you could argue for the potential of a higher ceiling by season end. Weigman is a veteran in his third year and did have his best game of his career (unfortunately no TDs in that game). He could have momentum and the needed confidence going forward. The question is how good would he be in an away game or with pressure (he had plenty of time in the Missouri game)? Time will tell.

I think the ceiling of Weigman is much higher and he showed that against Missouri. For that reason, he should be the starter.

The zip and accuracy that Weigman showed against Mizzou is probably the best we've seen in a long time. It looked like he was determined to prove some people wrong, even if it meant breaking a few receiver's fingers in the process.

Everything about his passes were almost perfect. Timing was something I dont think I've ever seen on such a consistent basis. He threw a nice tight ball with zip and accuracy. It was an amazing game.

Seriously would like to see CW throw farther accurate passes and show smarter game management skills. Other than that, he's getting better. Also, great to know Reed is ready to go at any given point!

Michael, I like stats as much as the next guy. But when you use a three games sample size the stats can be misleading. You have to pair it with your eyeballs before making a conclusion
