Of all the Aggie traditions, Disappointment is probably the tradition that stands out during football season. We start out with high expectations, and then we are quickly brought down to earth by a lackluster performance in the first game, followed by inconsistent performance in the subsequent games. Those early season mistakes never seem to go away, and we spend the rest of the season wondering if the next game will be the one where the team finally pulls it all together. Probably not.
This season started out the same way it always has, so a lot of of us resigned ourselves to honoring the oldest of Aggie traditions: Disappointment. But things are different this year, almost imperceptibly so, but definitely different. All those stupid little mistakes and misplays that frustrate us all are slowly disappearing. Not all at one time, but according to a pattern. Coaches are getting more inventive. Players are more disciplined. Momentum is building. This team and these coaches are building something, and it's not an accident. Every week, the product is one step closer to the goal visualized by Coach Elko when he first took the job. All according to plan.
When I looked at the replay of the Missouri game, I didn't focus on all the things the team did right. I noticed the things they did wrong, and the fact that there were fewer of those mistakes than the week before. And looking back on it, I realized that this has been the case with every game: a slow but steady build toward the team that Elko envisions. I do not recall an Aggie season when I was so confident that the team that took the field for the next game would be better than the one that played the week before. It's fun to watch.

Of all the Aggie traditions, DISSAPPOINTMENT!
Man, That Hurts! But.... It may be seasons and seasons of expectations.
Now this season, you pretty much nailed it.
Game 1 - Opening Game Jitters, new approach, new players in the mix, AND a Pretty Seasoned Opponent.
Game 2 - Not really much of a test.
Game 3 - a new QB with a NEW set of Strengths and Weaknesses. An Opponent that started the Season with High Expectations AND was Struggling. We're already a Down on Offensive Lineman or 2. Now that new QB was not what the opponent prepared for. Not much film. We might have had a few surprises. Defense Played Pretty Well. But a Very Solid Win!
Game 4 - For a NON-Power 5 team, a very seasoned opponent. Offensively the O-Line plays pretty well, but struggles to make holes for the run game. Lots of Yards from the QB. Opponent is able to load the box on run downs, etc. Pass Game struggles, could be QB timing, could be good coverage, could be a QB that doesn't have the experience to throw before the receivers are open. Still a WIN, but not a impressive as We had Hoped.
Game 5 - Another Victory, or Defense does a good job in this game. We got Out Rushed, Out Passed, but the inconsistent opponent gave us 3 turnovers. ANOTHER WIN!
Game 6 - Back in KYLE vs an Undefeated Opponent. An Opponent that needed OT to beat Vandy. We have QB1 Back. Oh, Is the OLine Ready to protect against a less mobile QB? Our opponent was pretty successful last year. Our Opponent doesn't think Kyle Field will be loud. WELL SURPRISE!!!. We have a NEW Passing Game. This Passing Game won't let them load the Box and our O-Line is Pass Protecting AND creating Holes for the Running Backs. Our Defense help us control the clock. Not only were we scoring, we, were getting quite a few 3 & outs.
LOVED the Last Defensive Stand!!! The game was put away, but we aren't letting you score! That's how you win ball games. Damn Impressive Win. This years strength of Mizzou yet to be determined.
Game 7 - Road Game. Frikkin Cowbells. Who Knows how they are improving, They just lost to a Nationally Ranked GA Team that kind of like last year is developing as the year goes on. Not the Juggernaut of 2 yrs. ago. A Jeff Lebby team that likes to go fast, but may not have the players.
Will the Aggie QB 1 show that the performance of the Mizzu game something that we all have anticipated?
I guess the TRADITION you mentioned hit to close to home. I call My Fish Year Learning a little HUMILITY. Yes we started 2-0. A win on the road against a Top 5 Ranked LSU Team the down the drain. Hell I think it was the TCU game and I pulled my tickets on Fri just before closing and the were like row 16, 2nd deck 45 yd line.I LIKE this TEAM and like what I hear from this staff. DEFENSIVELY 1st we were giving up too many run yards. Fixed that and didn't seem to lose the pass rush (actually seems to have improved too!) During the break, supposed to work on giving up too many pass yards. OFFENSIVELY We continue to see the O-Line get better, the running backs seem to have holes to run thru. Think we had 10 receivers make catches the last game. Need a few more to the TE's, but OK. Might be the Best Running Backs coach we have in a while. The OC calls plays that fit the teams strengths. We are getting better each week.
But it's mid season. We are beginning to see who's a Contender and who's a Pretender! There are ongoing questions about the Ags. Can they, Will They live up to expectations? We are IN the conversation, but... We need this game to set us up for what might be a National HI light Game against LSU.
I cautiously OPPTIMISTIC about this season. I think we'll cover this week.
