I know it's not just them, but they're the ones showing up all over my social media recently. How come nobody knows how to spell? I mean, in the age of autocorrect, there's no excuse. A truly entertaining event would be a spelling bee between the fans of the two schools…..
Give me the guy who shoots for excellence and fails over the guy who shoots for mediocrity and succeeds.

Am I the only one that doesn't consider this one of the best rivalry games? I know it's a rivalry, but it's not near the top of the list. Seems like they try and make it a big deal

The fact that it is played "early" in the season probably makes it seem that way as most rivalry games tend to happen at or near the end of the season.

That fact might also be the source of another reason the game IS a little overblown. Since both teams have a history of success, the almost always start the season ranked or highly ranked. Couple that with most schedules being soft at the start, and the game almost always has two highly ranked teams even in years when one or both are mediocre because they haven't had time to lose any games and fall in the rankings.

So yeah, it's a big rivalry game but the circumstances make it seem a bit over blown.

This is the right take. Always a product of both teams being ranked early in the season. If one team is down and out of the national spotlight, then there is probably little interest in the game outside of Texas and Oklahoma. That being said that since there has been so many of the ranked/national implication type games and both are storied programs that it will always sustain the label of one of the great rivalries.

Now that they're in the SEC the game is finally at 2:30, seems like it's been an 11am game the last 5 years or so. The early timeslot is another thing that takes away from it being considered a "major" game

Don't Michigan and Ohio st usually play at noon est?

To me, that's the best rivalry game because it's st the end of the season s d both teams are usually highly ranked and the hatred is as real as it gets

I don't think time slot makes a difference

To me, ou Texas is a good rivalry game but not on that level because the true hate isn't there like it is for tu/a&m or osu/Michigan , bama/auburn etc…

Sure, they dislike each other, but it's A&M that tu is always trying to put down and truly can't stand to see have success

Living in Dallas and it being in the fair...its a big deal in the metroplex for a week. Not nearly as much if the teams are not highly ranked, but since the 2000's at least one of them has been ranked highly...sometimes both. Its a unique game.

That said, if t.u. really hated ou as much as they claim, they would go to a home and home series. The RRR is the only thing keeping ou relevant. It really doesn't have anything else going for it as a school or as a state. its an also ran in the SEC. Other than cheating their way to past success they have nothing to offer that distinguishes them from most other sec schools. I would compare them to Arkansas now.

LOL at thinking Texas/A&M is a bigger rivalry than Texas/OU. For any rivalry to truly be big, then both fan bases need to equally share the same sentiment with each other which is what you get with Texas/OU. Texas fans simply view A&M as a little brother no matter how much you personally want to be seen as more important than OU. Large polling of college football fan bases supports this.

https://knowrivalry.com/team/longhorns-texas-97/

This graph is from all the data this site has gathered. Notice how there's an arrow going back and forth between OU and Texas while there's only one arrow going from A&M to Texas.

Additionally, Texas/OU is more like a battle between the states of Texas and Oklahoma which can be viewed as bigger than any in-state battle. Same with Michigan/tOSU being "bigger" than Alabama/Auburn. But also the nature of the RRR game itself being at a neutral site with both fans equally split down the middle of the 50 creates a very intense atmosphere that is unique to only this game and nothing else (including other neutral site games).

I went to school at Texas and Texas A&M. I go to the TX/OU game almost every year. It's a different level of hate. I can't explain it. The fact that it's played at the fair grounds, makes it even more unique. After the game, there's even more hate.

I went to a lot Texas vs Texas A&M games. Don't get me wrong, it's an intense rivalry but it's a different feel. I think there's a little bit of respect toward each other. Still intense. My family and friends are split between Texas and Texas A&M. We would go the game not liking each other but enjoy each others company afterwards. You don't have that at TX/OU.

I was at the 1999 Texas/Texas A&M game, year of the tragic bonfire. Texas band dedicated their halftime show to the fallen. That's respect. A&M would show the same class if an event like this happened at Texas. You don't see that level of respect between Texas and OU.

Do what? Historically the early game (noon eastern) has been the national game and the 2:30 games were regional.

In terms of national importance and interest there's just no comparison with A&M. And I'm in no way discounting A&M as an important rival but as an analogy it's this:

Michigan/Ohio State - national.
Michigan/Michigan State -regional.

USC/Notre Dame - national
USC/UCLA -regional

Texas/OU -national
Texas/Texas A&M -regional
Texas/Arkansas - nobody gives a **** except Arkansas.

The top pairings are far bigger to the sport than the lower ones no matter how much Michigan State and UCLA and A&M don't accept that.

And I've been to tons of each. I sat in the A&M student section in 1989 with a good friend of mine when he was getting his engineering degree there, it was friendly and fun. I sat at DKR in 2004 on the edge of where the A&M players' parents were sitting and the couple right next to us were the parents of an Aggie DB who was starting. It was literally smiles and good natured humor throughout. "Aw, you got us there.." and such. We smiled and shook hands at the end and I complimented them on how well their son played.

I've been to 7 Texas/OU games and as often as not I didn't even get inside the stadium before I wanted to strangle multiple OU fans and I've never been in a physical fight in my life of any consequence. The teams could more often than not not even be inside the tunnel at the same time because they would physically fight. The stories of fights the night before between fans and the ridiculous build-up insults during the week between players, especially from the 70s to the 90s, is unlike any I've ever seen. Inside the Cotton Bowl you feel like everyone is levitating with the split crowd because on every single play there's roaring. The fans are at it as much as the players. That's why there are so many upsets and momentum swings in the series. With Texas/A&M the clearly better team almost always wins.

I mean, even people with no affiliation with either school at all talk about how crazy and intense it is. Greg McElroy, who QB'd at Alabama, on ESPN just said this morning he's been to 9 of them and it's his favorite game in the sport.

You know it's one of the best rivalry games (top 5) but your emotion towards Texas makes you upset that Texas as a top 5 rivalry game of all time with yours. What game would you replace this game with in the top 5 rivarlies?

Only game I'd say was a "bigger brand " rivalry game would be Ohio State and Michigan. It's considered by most, to be this states biggest rivalry game, by many.

Yeah, not many would dispute that. There's also the distinction between rivalries as being routinely nationally meaningful and rivalries that are just considered great for their own sake (biggest vs. greatest). You're almost always going to see Army/Navy and Cal/Stanford in the top 5 or 6 rivalry games, but no one is going to pretend they ever have much practical significance to anyone outside those schools.

Regardless of hate levels, Texas/OU is just on another level than Texas/A&M in terms of national relevance.

In the whole history of the polls back to the 1930s there have been a grand total of two top-ten matchups between Texas and A&M, 1941 and 1975. Texas/OU has had 17 of them, a large number of them being top-five matchups, and an enormous part of the remainder of the games have been things like #1 vs #11 or #3 vs #12 and so on. It's so obviously night and day in terms of "bigness" it blows my mind that anyone would try to argue it.
Faustus

I don't think he really tried to argue it (2nd post was "it just doesn't feel like it"). It was more just to wind Texas fans up.

Good job by all the sips to get over here to their non rival's site to defend their precious rivalry game from the mean old Aggie who said he didn't GAS about it. Especially Cav 14 and his impressive graph of "data".

Question: Who here remembers the 2013 Cotton Bowl and who all the sips were rooting for? Surely it wasn't for their most hated rival in all the world was it?

It's definitely one of the bigger ones, no disputing that. I will say that in my little world I consider Iron bowl, mich v OSU, FSU v Florida, and A&M v tu (in no particular order) as my top tier. Second tier I have OU v tu, ND v USC, bama v Tenn, UGA v Auburn, etc.

The relevancy rises and falls in different decades. Honestly when Nebraska was basically Alabama, they had some great games v the Big 12 that bordered on rivalry level.

Edit to say, I grew up in SEC country after leaving Texas in my younger years -- region and TV coverage back then definitely plays a factor when this stuff takes shape in your brain over many years. Would be interesting to see a poll across America on what they consider to be the top rivalries. Especially over different time periods.

I was hoping we'd never play the sips again. LSU is a much more fun rivalry and their fans aren't vaginas.
