I don't think anyone thought Durkin was bad; he just wasn't as good as Elko as the DC.

He wasn't bad per se, but he wasn't good. He was the type that would be either very strong up front but weak on the back, or vice versa. He always overcompensated in certain areas to the detriment of others.

Plus that **** eating grin always made things worse.

Wasted DL talent with the insane 3 man front. Auburn can keep him.

Multiple All Americans last season, top 25 defense in the country, lead the SEC in sacks and was #2 in TFLs, and had the #1 rushing defense. We just struggled a lot with the pass. 90% of teams in CFB would like to have that.

They look pretty good. I never was negative on Durkin or his smile. He was not as good as what we have now though.

This. It amazes me that people cant seem to understand that our offensive struggles put a lot of pressure on the D. And when all was said and done the D stats were remarkable, all things considered.

Durkin's secondary was mediocre last year. Not awful. Not good.

Durkin could certainly coach up linebackers. And I'd argue that Auburn's problem this year is not really defense.


But yeah, would rather have Elko.

We had an insane amount of 5* talent on the D-line and we were thin at LB... so of course he ran 3 man fronts a majority of the time.

He was good and we would've gone far with him if Jimbo's offense wasn't so damn putrid.

But then again, fans tend to blame guys who are actually performing for not performing even better in losses.

People always argued with me on here when I would rip Urkin and beg for a new D coach. They would point to the D not being that bad.

But these people simply don't understand football. Urkin wasted incredible talent here. He made the defense about as bad as it could be, given all the talent.

Still can't get over the fact the people on here don't even think the D was bad against LSU last year and wanted Urkin to stay. LSU scored 6 TDs on 8 possessions (excl end of half and game kneel downs). Are you freakin kidding me?

Can't you freakin see that? Go watch some film last year and see all the dumb mistakes he made.

If you watch Auburn this past weekend, you witnessed the same poor tackling that we had under Durkin.

He refused to adjust to our roster of talent. Exposing the team to our weakness while not exploiting our strength.

This is it in a nutshell.
We had a lack of talent and depth in the secondary last year and every team with a competent passing attack lit us up but he rarely tried to use our DL talent to crank up the pressure on the QB.
Against strong running teams, he would run a lot of three man fronts.
Nothing he did made a lot of sense.

In all fairness. He did improve in year two. Although I couldn't understand his scheme, to save my life. With all the three man fronts, and 6'5 defensive ends dropping into coverage. lol very strange.

In fairness that lsu offense was really damn good last year and made a lot of dc's look bad

I don't think durkin was good but he wasn't awful

He was kinda meh. Lots of dc's could have gotten our results with our defensive roster

Our defense under Durkin produced similar rankings in DFEI to what Elko produced outside Elko's last year which was truly elite.

I know a lot of you hated him but he wasn't bad by any means.

I think most of the hate is from watching him run a 3 man front against a team rushing for hundreds of yards per game (ol piss) and the QB having all day to pick the secondary apart. Watching that was torture, err the hate.

I never said he was great as Elko. I don't think I need to "freaking see that" again to know that. There was a lot to be desired from his defense when he was here.

With that being said, a lot of the issues stemmed from them being completely exhausted from having to haul our offense's butt after being out in the field for 30 seconds.

We faced our last O coordinator two weeks ago vs Arky and won. We face our D coordinator last yr vs Auburn. We will see what happens.

I think he would have been been better this year and the buyout was too much and harmed our athletic department. But I'm fine with Elko. I'm more impressed by the Schloss hire and the Earley replacement.
