This. Our defense is playing well enough to win us some close ones but juuuust inconsistent enough on big plays to lose one we should win. If we can get to 10 wins that shows how good this coaching staff is. 9 wins and there is hope for the future.

Personally I'll be very disappointed with 8 wins. We don't have "the" quarterback you need to win it all and our receivers lack explosion, but we're talented enough that a good coach can find a way.

Jimbo went 8-4 in 2018 with (IMO) a more talented team than this 2024 squad plus had Elko as DC. The State and Auburn games plus Clemson made me want to eat my hat.

Too early in the season for a whole lot of "big" wins. The meat of the season remains, and some wins that don't appear to be "big" at this point may turn out to have been "big".

Also keep in mind these rankings are not rankings based on record. A team can be 8-4 at the end of the season but be a top ranked team.

Just because you feel something doesn't mean it is true. Michigan is a top 10 team. Their only loss was to a #1 Coaches/#2 AP. They beat #11 team and another power 4 conference team.

What other team 11-20 would you put ahead of them?

#11 USC - They lost to Mich
#12 Ole Miss - They lost their only power conference game to a middling Kentucky. All other was essentially HS teams
#13 LSU - They lost to USC that lost to Mich, so they can't jump USC
#14 ND - They lost to N Ill. No other great wins
#15 Clemson - Lost to #5 team, no other good wins
# 16/17 ISU/BYU - They are undefeated, so I guess so but you have trashed the Big 12 in the past.
#18 Utah - Lost to Arizona. Best win is over OKstate with 2 losses.
#19 OU - Lost to Tenn #4. No other good wins
#20 KSU - Lost to BYU

So Michigan has the best loss and also the best win of any one loss team 11-20. If you want to put ISU/BYU above them b/c they are undefeated with no really good wins as #11 USC, sure I will give you that on record alone.

Not really. Power rankings show them below us at 22. They are not a top 10 team.

I think nine wins sneaks into the playoff. If Elko can snag a first round win and finish 10-4, he deserves a raise. But if he finishes 9-4, Sharp better leave that round in the chamber.

So you are using power rankings that has Ole Miss #6 and texas #1 as a reason? The teams Ole Miss beat, almost any top 25 team wins by 30. The middling SEC team they played, they lost at HOME.

Any power rankings are useless until teams start to play similar teams.

The only facts are what has happened.

Team A - 4-1. Lost to #2 and beat #11.

What other 11-25 team has a better resume? Maybe ISU/BYU b/c they are undefeated. But every other 1 loss team has nothing similar.

No raise in yr 1 shy of a conference title imo. Even then, his contract incentives probably take care of him enough. We've been down this road too many x before.

Jmo, he wants to be here . He is compensated plenty fairly and he understands advantages and potential here . He doesn't care that much about $ at this point , he just wants to elevate the program and the rest will take care of itself.

I don't know much about Mike Elko, but he seems to be doing all the right things. The challenge in the first couple of years is flushing the Jimbo culture and instilling his own. I think anything over seven wins in year one is huge. I just predicted nine wins, and a realistic shot at 10 or 11 assuming they continue to improve.

I agree with you that a raise after the first season is risky, but honestly if he makes the playoff, I don't think Sharp and the BMDs will be able to control themselves. But if Elko has the attitude you say he does, raise or no raise, he'll keep his head down and work just as hard.

Another thing I believe but I could be 100% fos. Our culture favors a defense first team. Sure we want a potent offense but our history suggests a dominant defense is our preferred calling card . The 12th man always has brought incredible energy for the defense in particular. I think Elko appreciates that .

Once again I dunno where the blue star comes from. Am I fat fingering and accidentally making it happen or what?

Florida continues to creep up the rankings. They are starting to look like a good win.

New Mexico State is ranked 130 out of 134 teams.

the rankings I use have gators at #21 now. they have improved each week for sure

I'm not convinced Florida beats Arkansas, who looks like a quality win.

Hopefully they give Lsu hell this weekend.

Despite the horrible coaching decisions they do seem to be moving up.

I'm thinking they do end up falling again before the year is over.

It's more likely the Aggies go 10-1
Than Texas goes 11-0

i think they stlll finish with 5 wins or less but they do have some players that will make them a tough game

Texas and LSU are the only games left on the schedule the Ags need to worry about. I know it's the SEC and anything can happen, but Mike Elko has done a phenomenal job turning the culture around. After Notre Dame I was expecting 7-5. Now I'm thinking 9-3 at the worst.

They need to worry about Mississippi st, Auburn, and South Carolina as well. Have we not been seeing the games this season?

Correct, and they also need to realize that managing a schedule is a bit like driving as well: One can't just worry about the quality of your own driving. One needs to also be very aware of the driving going on around them.

Any given saturday is a real thing now.
