How many times have we gotten screwed on a targeting call?! I'll take it going our way for once

I get the sentiment, but there is a kid on the other side sitting out the rest of this game because he made a solid tackle.

Most BS targeting I ever saw. They have to get this penalty out of game.

Blown targeting call, but my god, how hard is it to keep your face mask up. You learn that **** in HS ball.

bs call . Someone in the SEC office wants Napier fired imo.

I agree that shouldn't be a penalty, but it is targeting under the rule. The broadcast 'expert' said there was no intent. Intent is not in the rule and he should know that. It's a strict liability penalty.

I agree but it's the stupid rule.

And ejection is too severe a penalty.

Maybe a bad rule but that was textbook targeting. Speared his butt with the crown of his helmet. As the rule is written that was an easy call.

Wrong. That was bad form. See what you're tackling. Dumb to lower your head and lose sight of the receiver.

The problem is that the text of the rule has changed so often that very few (including me and Jesse Palmer) know what is and isn't targeting…

Agree all around. Penalty box or a quarter and that's it.

If he keeps his face toward the receiver, instead of lowering his head and leading with the crown of the helmet, it's not targeting (and the tackler reduces his own risk of neck injury.)

When I played high school ball, many moons ago, we were taught to "spear" with the helmet (a "weapon").

It always seemed to me then that tackling with your face to the ball carrier could injure your neck by bending it backwards, but it today it seems that the real risk is axially compressing the spine, hence the rule against hitting with the crown.

By the rule that was clearly targeting.

I don't know. Ask running backs on every carry.

I hate it for the kid but to the letter of the law..he lead with the crown, no question about that. To be honest...how many of those have gone against us over the years ...a ton so nice to fine get some our way.

Take another loook. His head completely compressed through his neck. Targeting, as much as I hate the inconsistency on called infractions, protects both offense and defender. Remember Darryl Stingley (sp).

The targeting call is to protect both offensive and defensive players. What the Florida guy did used to be called "spearing". Now it's targeting if they use the crown. Regardless of where contact is made with the offensive player.

If it protects players then why aren't running backs tossed every game for ramming their helmets in to defenders?

I know about all that but that was barely there. By the rule it was targetting but I don't think that one was so bad.

I agree it was iffy but that is how kids break their necks hitting with the crown.

Like I said, inconsistent calls. This one could have ended much worse than it did. Tackle like you're taught and it wouldn't be an issue.

We've been screwed ourselves so many times in big moments on defensive holding or targeting calls...I'm going to gladly accept whenever the football gods give us some love.

It wasn't so bad but he clearly tackled with the crown. Doesn't take much to break a neck if the form is poor

It shouldn't be inconsistent. If you throw defenders out for that then you should throw RB's out. Hell, the first run on FL's last drive had the RB hit the Aggie defender square in the chest with the crown.

Take the helmets off and play rugby if this is the way football is going to be called.
