I'm surprised the Pac 12 doesn't just merge with the MWC. I predict that in addition to Utah State, they will also consider UNLV. I also think Rice, UTSA, and Memphis also get considered. Gonzaga also gets considered as an addition for basketball only purposes.

Sources: Pac-12 rebuilding conference, targeting Boise State, San Diego State, Fresno State, Colorado State

If SMU, Cal, and Stanford would have been patient, they could had a league of Cal, Stanford, Oregon State, Washington State, Colorado State, San Diego State, SMU, Air Force, Fresno State, and Boise State. That would have been a decent 10 team league and could have probably gotten a TV contract around $20-25 Million per team with reduced travel costs and more regionality.

Edit: Since Cal, Stanford, and SMU ain't joining the new PAC. They should consider adding Air Force, UNLV, Utah State, and FCS powerhouses Montana, South Dakota State, and North Dakota State. Maybe consider UTEP and perhaps UTSA if any of those say no??? Its not $20-25M but maybe $10-$15M.

So question for those following, but why not UNLV among the 4?

It probably has the biggest name brand, but its also potentially the best location for any conference tournament, meetings, media, etc? It's probably the easiest of those locations to get to for teams and fans.

I've been thinking on this, and I have 3 reasons.

1. Their legislature isn't going to allow Nevada and UNLV to split.
2. Big 12 has contacted them, and is interested.
3. Maybe I'm overthinking the brand value of UNLV.

I know I wrote that UNLV should be considered for the Pac, but I didn't think about Nevada. My guess is that UNLV and Nevada are a package deal and right now, the Pac needs to find 2 unique media markets and so for that reason, I don't think UNLV would be invited to the Pac.

People speculating about Cal and Stanford joining that group would be crazy even without the ACC contract. They think they are too good for the Cal State institutions. They'd much rather fly their volleyball teams to the east coast along with all their other non revenue teams than rub shoulders with the lower classes of California colleges. The inflated egos of many PAC universities is what contributed to the collapse of the conference. Its why they couldn't live with the lower payout TV deals being offered to them.

Exactly.

Stanford funds a whole lot more sports than most schools just because they can. Cal was so hurt by UCLA getting into the Big Ten than they would never consider being in a conference with a bunch of "trade schools." Ironically, if Stanford hadn't blackballed Texas from joining the conference (along with Colorado) back in the late '80s, the Pac probably would have been a survivor (A&M and Arkansas would have gone to the SEC).

It will be interesting to see who the remaining 2 to 8 teams might be. A school like Memphis or usf or UTSA have a few factors in leaving the AAC. (UConn from Big East)

1. If it's a lot more money you probably take the offer. It likely will be perceived as more glamorous.

2. It's not a power 5 conference, and winning the AAC is a more viable route for the college football playoffs.

3. If the Big 12 or ACC come calling those are better conferences and you are screwed if locked into deal with PAC.

4. If you turn them down, the AAC is likely losing 2 more decent programs making it even worse conference. It becomes CUSA or Sun belt

I guess they they could go East West conference, picking the 6 best firm the Midwest/East, and limit travel between divisions for non revenue sports. Especially if they went 16 teams.

Add UNLV and Air Force to West

Add UCF, Memphis, East Carolina, UConn, Navy, UTSA and I had to stop because there are no other good candidates.

Temple and Tulane would be easy to fly to, I guess.
App State is a travel partner maybe.

And then Air Force replace them in the AAC to make a league with AF, Navy and Army.

Umm...it's actually not as extreme as Stanford and cal in the ACC, which is just as ridiculous. At least they can play each other once a year. What's Memphis' closest conference member? Fort Collins...?

Is the SEC the only conference with a name that actually still fits their conference makeup (location and numbers)...?

Little known fact: UA-Little Rock has competed in the Pac-12 since 2019. UALR competes in wrestling, but since it isn't a Sun Belt conference sport, it has wrestled in the Pac, along with only 3 other schools.

Current rumors for the next 4 teams to get the conference to 10: Memphis, UNLV, USF, and Tulane.

I've been thinking about UNLV, and while I used to think they were a great grab, now I'm not sure.

They used to be the #1 game in town, but now Vegas has added NHL and NFL, and soon MLB and possibly NBA.

That city does not have the population to support all those teams and maintain UNLV as relevant as they once were.

Utah State may be better.

I've also heard that UConn would be a football-only team that would complement Gonzaga as a non-football member.

That would get them to 8.

Well, evidently Air Force and San Jose State have signaled they are staying in the MWC. San Jose State just downsized their stadium so they are a non-starter anyway. That said it appears Utah State made the jump to the PAC. If I am the PAC, I push hard for UNLV to get to 8 football teams, if for no other reason Vegas and TV market.

Then you are faced with do you complete the MWC raid with Air Force and stop there. Chances are there will be ill will between remaining MWC teams and the new PAC teams. Do you add any number of the FCS schools in order to be able to fill out a schedule?

I think you definitely add Gonzaga and St Mary's for hoops and other sports.

I believe the AAC media deal is $8-9 mm/ year. Given that and tweet below, I understand why those teams said no. The upside wasn't there, but the costs were real.

Big 12 is much better than any MW version right now. ACC good? Just Clemson a few years ago and Miami/Florida State in much better years are standouts from current Big 12. Rest wins occur perfectly on football.

Only Boise State at its best trashes current best Big 12 and they and TCU never did that with a solid conference schedule even as tough as revamped Bg 12…

…so…not apples to apples comparison and just a BDF put down. You should treat them as being innovative and meaningfully making progress to survive.

PAC 12 is at 7 schools. Do you add 1, 2, 3, or 5 schools? Now that the 7 remaining members of MWC are staying together, what's the play? UTEP? Arm twist UTSA with a sweetened offer? Pair UTSA with Texas State? UNT? The Dakota FCS schools? MWC will be expanding so get the best you can. I would imagine the Dakota FCS schools and the Montana FCS schools are probably on MWC radar. New Mexico State? Thoughts???

If it's me, I add 3 football schools and Gonzaga & St Mary's for hoops and other sports.

I think the PAC is a little bit screwed at this moment.
None of those schools moves the TV dial, and at this moment, adding more than the minimum only dilutes the payout and hurts the product.

I think their move is to beg UConn to play football only and get Gonzaga for all other sports so they are at 8. Maybe even New Mex St from CUSA but they are absolutely horrible (but it fits the "State" theme)

Then try to survive until the next shake up when they either get some ACC returnees, or top AAC teams, but to hope for those things indicates they are hurting.
