It's about power and influence. If you get people to join you, you get to dictate terms. If you join others, you do as your told.

Same will happen when the SEC and B1G merge one day. It will be about who concedes to join first.

There are some money factors involved in trying to keep the Pac alive. If they do so, they get to keep NCAA revenue shares, among other things.

As far as the "brand" goes, I think that is overrated, but we shall see. Given the change to the CFP rules, there is no such thing as Power status anymore; you have to earn on the field, as the byes, and the the 5th champion's spot, simply go to the highest rated conference champions.

There has to be some money waiting for these schools. These exit fees are significant for the MWC.

I don't know if the conference dissolves if it will be required to pay them, but that's a big price for those schools.

This is what relegation looks like when you keep adding a couple new "P5" teams every decade and don't kick schools out that are falling behind the pack. Not that we don't see this elsewhere to a lesser extent (cough...B12...cough).

They won't be Power 5 anymore. Remember when the Big East folded (in football), and the leftovers filled their ranks with above average mid-majors? That's the AAC, which for years had "power 6" branding. It didn't work.

Living in boise, it would be nice to be able to see some bigger programs through here, but otherwise I just don't see much benefit aside from BSU having the opportunity to dominate a "power conference." For me, the appeal for eventually getting big programs (not the in-conference rejects) to come to town would be awesome. Putting a different conference badge on your uniform doesnt make the competition any more relevant or better though. And is there really any potential increase in revenue to go with it...?

Feels like putting a Mercedes logo on your base civic after Mercedes goes out of business after making a deal with Chrysler. Does the fancy badge suddenly make your commuter car into a luxury vehicle...? And all the other cars in your new Mercedes lineup consist of fiats, corollas, dodge calibers, and a handful of Chinese and Russian cars no ones even heard of. They're not all horrible per say, but hardly impressive.

Should be a battle worth watching ....

PAC2 may only be down to 2 members right now .... BUT MAN CAN THEY STILL PAC A PUNCH!

I get that but I'm not so sure Or St and Wash St have that much leverage. It doesn't matter to me one way or the other but I feel like this isn't going to work out like they hope it will. Credit to them for trying tho and it wouldn't hurt my feelings at all if it did work out for them.

I thought the more interesting move would be to have the Pac merge with the Mtn West and the AAC (post Houston/Cinci/UCF defections, but before adding their replacements) and add any remaining interesting pieces like UConn or UTSA to form a 20-22 team league. Then petition to have a 4 team conference championship.

Its motto could be, "There's 22 teams here, somebody has to be good!"

There is no way it can compete with SEC/Big Ten, but it doesn't now, and at least it wouldn't be much below the Big 12.


I guess the way it is potentially operating now, you could have the Pac glean from the best of the MTN West, and then pick out the best from the AAC, C-USA and the independents.


I wonder if this kicks in any more expansion from the ACC as it needs to consider what it will look like without FSU and Clemson and possibly other brand name schools.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I heard on the radio this morning that in 2026, the PAC could get their automatic berth back into the 12 team playoff.

There is no automatic berth in the CFP under the new rules. It's top four in rankings with byes, and the 5th (by ranking) get's an at large. Theoretically, the SEC or Big Ten could be shut out.

Keeping the Pac alive will matter for other NCAA competitions where the conference champions get auto bids (like basketball and baseball), and will also preserve the conference's NCAA distribution credits, which accumulate over time and are paid out in the following years.

Would love to see the PAC12 kept alive.

And from the sidelines, watch the negotiations / posturing happen between the Rose Bowl, Big10, and PAC12.

Expansion aside, I think Oregon State is out for blood and since they are hosting the Ducks this weekend it could really be an interesting game given Oregon's sputtering start with mediocre wins against Idaho and Boise St.

I'm thinking about buying tickets and driving 40 miles north to Corvallis just to see what happens.
