I was in the stadium to witness Franklin's kicks which I believe the 64 yarder was first then he broke his own record with the 65 yarder. Even with Ove's college record Franklin held the NCAA record until Little and Erxleben kicked 67 yarders the following season. I've never been in awe of a kicker except for the first time I saw Franklin warming up before the KSU game earlier that year. Incredible.

I used to love to watch Tony Franklin warm up... He'd start on the 30, then move back to the 40... Then just to prove he could do it, the 50.

Those Franklin kicks were off a tee. Grant Taff was so pissed after the Baylor loss he got the NCAA to change and eliminate the FG tee the following year.

The tee wasn't eliminated until the '80s. However, Teaff got them to change the touchback rule (used to, the defending team got the ball on the 20 after a miss, as long as the ball went into the endzone, so there was little reason not to try long field goals).

Not sure where you're getting all this. For one, Baylor lost that game 24-0. So he may have been pissed, but it was probably due to his team's play that day. For another, as twk said, the tee wasn't eliminated until 1989.

I believe, but don't have the book to prove it definitively, that Taeff was on the Rules Committee in 1990 (and maybe in 1989) so he MAY have had a hand in the tee getting bounced, but it was a decade and a half after this game.

Taeff didn't have anything to do with the rule change in 1978 that moved the ball to the previous spot (LOS) after a missed field goal rather than the 20, effectively a touchback. Or, if he did, it was networking.

Baylor had a decent kicker that year. 100% extra points and almost 50% FGs. Don't know his range, though. Probably not as good as the big 3 in the SWC (and college football) at the time (Franklin, Little, Erx).

Sat in the endzone for the Franklin field goals, the only time it turned out to be the best seat in the house. Both kicks looked like they were going to be very wide right but kept hooking back and went through the uprights.

A high school friend was playing the the Abilene Christian game with Johansson.
