Now a 16-team league, former Texas A&M and Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight knows what it's like to play in both Norman and College Station. On Wednesday's edition of TexAgs Radio, Knight spoke on A&M's QB play and 10-win expectations for both the Ags and Sooners.

Key notes from Trevor Knight interview

  • Inherently as college football moves towards these superconferences, realignment, and NIL, you want the best of the best playing against each other week in and week out.

  • I couldn’t be more excited for the brand of football we are going to have in the SEC. It has been superior to the rest of the conferences in the country, but then you add a Longhorn and Sooner logo to the mix, and now, there’s even more buzz.

  • Oklahoma is an unbelievable program and is a mainstay in college football, and it has been for a long time. It is different in the SEC, though, and I got to experience that firsthand. When you're going to Mississippi State, Ole Miss or Tennessee, it’s not like going to Kansas before they were competitive or a 5-5 Iowa State team.

  • The stature of players is different in the SEC. The magnitude of stadiums are different in the SEC. The week-in, week-out grind is different in the SEC. I think Oklahoma and Texas are going to have a learning curve, but I think they’re ready to make the move.

  • I am super excited for coach Mike Elko. The fact that he has been here before takes away the initial shock of having to go through the hurdles of entering a new program. He’s been able to put his head down and get to work, and I’m excited about what he has done this offseason.

  • I think the team has gravitated towards him and his staff. There's a lot of excitement in College Station right now. Inherently, when you do have a change, there are some questions, but I am excited that he is the guy leading the charge.

  • I think when you have multiple guys that can go out there and operate an offense, not only does the quarterback room become better, but the team as a whole does. I hope Conner Weigman goes out and has a world-class year and brings us to places we haven’t been before.

  • I think Conner has great poise. I think he has a level of leadership that goes past what we even see. He has an innate ability to get guys around him to play their best football. Johnny Manziel was like that. These guys want to step up their game because they want to play for him.

  • He obviously can make every throw and make big-time plays, but the intangibles and adversity that he has gone through make me really excited for Conner this season.

  • I think a good year is always up for interpretation. I think a 10-win season should be the standard in College Station. I think there's a path there, given the resources, players, and coaches we have. I really like what Trev Alberts has done for football, and I think there’s a lot of positive momentum this year.

  • I think Oklahoma has a lot of question marks around them. I don’t think the offensive line is returning any starters, and you have a brand-new quarterback in Jackson Arnold. I think the one thing they have going for them is that this is not the first year for Brent Venables.

  • I think Oklahoma can be competitive, but they have a gauntlet of a schedule this year. I think the mentality for them is taking it one week at a time. Don’t make the moment bigger than it is. Yes, it's a new conference, but let’s do what we do and see where we end up.

  • I think Oklahoma can scrape out nine wins, but the standard over there is 10, so I’ll put them in the same boat as A&M. I do think there is a path there for them as well, it’s just going to be a slug fest to get there.

  • I think Brent Venables is an SEC-ready coach. When he left Oklahoma for Clemson, they went on and built a dynasty. You can argue that he is still the best defensive mind in the country. I think his level of experience lets everyone take a deep breath.

  • I have no level of worry for Mike Elko. He has called defenses in the SEC before, and I’ll say that defense truly does win championships. I like our squad this year, and I think it’s poised to be an exciting year on both sides of the ball.
