Well he couldn't play defense, I'm pretty sure he put up video game numbers on offense though. Everyone just thought he was a system QB and gave all the credit to Kliff's magical QB dust.

While they averaged 44 points a game during 2015 and 2016, they were kept well under their average when playing good teams and/or decent defenses. Examples:

2015 Ark 35
2015 Baylor 35
2015 OU 24
2015 WV 27
2015 LSU 26
2016 WV 17
2016 TCU 27

That doesn't even include a blowout loss to a 3-9 Iowa State team and an inexplicable 10 point (only) win 30-20 over a winless KU team in 2015.

It was a hit or miss offense at best.

Mahomes was in the 2014 recruiting class, the same year as Kyle Allen. Kyler was in the 2015 class. Kyler wouldn't have any impact on Mahomes

this happens all the time.

happened with drew breees as well.

sometimes kids down't show enough coming out of High school to warrant the offers from the biggest programs but then turn out to be great players as they mature.

This is sad. We are turning into the tu we grew up hating. We miss so many texas boys by trying to get the "hottest' recruits in the nation.

He was probably underrated because he played at Whitehouse HS. I'm a few years older than Mahomes, but when I was in HS Whitehouse was a REALLY bad team. My school (Pine Tree) went 2-8 my senior year, but Whitehouse was a win we could always count on.

Sumlin would turned Mahomes and Kyler into knuckleheads like JFF…….these guys are glad they went elsewhere or they could be golfing in Arizona everyday with pals

Whitehouse was 12-1 in Mahomes' senior year (averaged over 50 pts per game) and he won the AP player of the year award (like Manziel). He was a multi-sport star, so his talent and potential should have been obvious to any coach.

Right. The Bears cannot get a great QB to save their lives and they picked Trubisky with No 2 pick. Mahomes went much later.

10th vs 2nd is not much later. He beat out Deshaun Watson.
The first of many, albeit most of the latter occurred on the massage table.

Maybe that he was a little ***** that didn't want to face SEC defenses?

He didn't have the NFL quality OL that JFF did, I'll grant him that.

Here comes the argument about what constitutes "great". He was certainly a *good* college QB by any measure. He chased another good college QB in Baker Mayfield out of Lubbock.

Mahomes was better than any aggie QB not named Manziel.

Mahomes was 0-9 versus ranked opponents and something like 13-19 as the starting QB (while playing weak dumpster fire defenses). He'll go down as one of the best in NFL history, but wasn't an elite college QB. And Baker Mayfield won a Heisman after being "chased" out of the barren wastelands of Lubbock.

This is some revisionist history here.

Sumlin was cooked when he promised Kevin Murray that Kyler would get playing time as a freshman, and didn't establish a starting QB.

Allen was never set as the starter, Kyler wasn't ready to play big boy football at that time, and it was an absolute charlie foxtrot of mismanagement. At one point Kyler refused to go back in the game against Alabama.

I don't blame either one for bailing for different opportunities. Worked out for both, but better for Kyler than Allen, who went ot UH because of the coaching staff, only to have Herman jump to tu right after he brought Allen in.

Mahomes didn't win a Hypseman but did win the Sammy Baugh award after his junior year before declaring for the draft. It wasn't like he was some unknown quarterback talent by the end of his junior year in college. I'm sure quite a lot of einsteins thought he was just a typical TT system quarterback though throwing up TT play station numbers like some qbs did under the Pirate.

He was a great college QB on a suck team with a terrible head coach. And those draft "experts" are looking very stupid right about now.

From the Tech football website:

Quote:

Mahomes led the nation in total offense his final two seasons as a Red Raider after starring at quarterback over three seasons from 2014-16. He threw for 11,252 yards and recorded 12,097 yards of total offense over his career, both of which rank third all-time among Tech quarterbacks. He accounted for 115 touchdowns during that span, 93 of which that came through the air and another 22 on the ground.

Mahomes became the 12th quarterback in NCAA FBS history, at the time, to pass for 5,000 yards in a season in 2016 when he did it in just 12 games. He is one of three signal callers all-time to reach 5,000 yards of total offense twice in a career, which ultimately pushed him into the national spotlight as the winner of the 2016 Sammy Baugh Award.

Yeah, but Kyler committed to us for football and baseball in May 2014. That did affect Mahomes…. but like I said, we didn't even call Patrick.

Players peak at different times. Was Mike Evans highly recruited? No but he got better in college and is an NFL all pro receiver. Garrett Gilbert was a stud in High School but fizzled out in college.

Mahomes had some great statistical seasons at Tech (under Kingsbury) and its carried over to the NFL and has had the benefit of being on a good team with good coaching (Reid and Spagnola). Crazy to think he only had less than a handful of college offers.

Couldn't disagree more. When Mahomes was in college, I would tune in the Tech game just to watch Mahomes play. I thought then that he was very special.

He was a great college qb, but thanks to Kingsbury, he never got to play with a defense outside of the bottom 10, so his record wasn't impressive. For example, in one of those 19 losses he literally had 819 yards of offense and 7 touchdowns but got the L because the tech defense gave up 854 yards of offense and 66 points (reread that entire LOL sentence).

Even a HOF QB is only one guy

Patrick Mahomes was not listed on ESPNs top 32 players in the 2017 draft, while QBs Mitch Triubisky and DeSean Watson were both ranked in the mid 20s. Likely the failure of all previous Tech Qbs contributed to the low rating for the latest Tech QB. It was a very strong draft with Myles Garrett going 1, CMC going top 10, TJ watt going near the end of round 1 and guys like Kamara, James Conner, Cooper Kupp and Godwin lasting until the third round.

So KC did reach by drafting PM 10th and probably could have drafted him in round 2 or 3.

Mahomes wasn't considered to be a great prospect coming out of HS. A lot of schools missed on him.

He did great at Tech. They couldn't win with him because Kingsbury didn't understand defense. Baker Mayfield started out at Tech around the same time. I think he was a walk on there.

Since NFL teams can't accurately project 22 year olds, how can we expect colleges to do so with 18 year olds? Players are always going to slip through the cracks.
Iraq2xVeteran
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Because Patrick Mahomes wasn't considered to be a great prospect coming out of high school, many colleges missed out on him. He posted great numbers at Texas Tech, but he had a losing record because they had horrible defenses. Baker Mayfield started at Texas Tech in 2013, a year before Patrick Mahomes. NFL teams can't accurately project 22-year-old draft prospects, and colleges can't accurately project 18-year-old high school recruits. There will always be players who exceed or miss expectations.

Recruiting Kyler was a serious mistake. He was always supposed to be a top baseball pick, which he was, and you had Allen here already. Kyler was never SEC quality. He had no size and would've been crushed by playing here for more than a season.

But Kyle Allen had the toughness mentally of an ant.
You do know he has been a starting QB in the NFL since 2019? He would be crushed in the SEC? Yet somehow against the best professional football players he has managed to keep playing? Wow, you are still hurt that he transferred? Talk about being bitter...

I liked kyler a lot, but he's VERY hit or miss from game to game. He's only "great"when he's running around creating plays outside of the pocket, not sitting in the pocket and throwing dimes 50 yards down field like mahomes or stroud do.
