This is going to start happening more and more with good college coaches. They don't want to deal with all of the transfer portal, NIL and recruiting nonsense. Overall coaching quality in college football is going to take a hit over the next 10 years.

No doubt. Combine with unrealistic expectations that a coach should win out because of this as well within 2-3 years it's gonna raise the price for quality coaches even more.

Him wanting to stay in Seattle had more to do with this than anything.

Bama could not get him to move last year.

Yeah, keeping the family in their home/network/support system + highest level of professional sports he is coaching in =

Which bodes well for us since it looks like Elko is all in on dealing with the current college football reality

Not really. The best players from lessor schools will feed up to the major programs. Quality could of play could go up among those teams. Just some more parity at the very top... More cash from a major program speaks volumes over a blue blood brand that has won a bunch lately, offering less..

The self-fulfilling cycle of winning for bama is over. And that's a good thing.

No biggie, players can still leave if they really want to in the next window.

This right here. Like many things in life, those that adapt the fastest will reap the rewards.

Assuming Elko does well

Also, assuming if he does well, he doesn't get tired of doing it over and over, but would rather have stability and a less headaches by just coaching football.

Agreed. Elko isn't in the minority though in being open to those things. Kiffin, Drink, Sark, etc all do it too

Another Blue Blood type boss move. Bama gets an NFL OC.

Ags add coaches from the likes of James Madison and Rutgers.

And folks wonder how the Alabama's do it and the TAMU 's of the world are stuck at 8-4. The Devil is in the Details.

Is he really an NFL OC? Just because he failed at the one season he did it?

Are you serious?

He was actually decent with an old Geno Smith at QB.

Any decent NFL OC is leagues ahead of any OC at the college level.

Lol- he got fired a month ago.

Not sure why you'd think landing a fired, one year NFL coach is a deal just bc he was in the NFL for a year.

Take a closer look. A good coach is a good coach whether they are from James Madison or the NFL.Unlike some of you geniuses I trust Coach Elko and think he knows what's best for A&M and you don't have to hire an ex NFL coach to get there. Dumb is dumb.

Deboer making coaching moves after one season proves he's a failure.

College coaching is going to decline but not for the reason stayed there are and have been about 400 nfl jobs that number is not changing. A few good coaches went from college to pro every year but there aren't enough jobs to affect college coaching

What might affect college coaching is lots of jobs at places like NC state, TCU , Auburn, Nebraska are going to become less good jobs and places like North Texas, Sam, Rice , Will become unattractive jobs impacting the number and quality of people that decide to get into coaching

I mean, you could say that on the defense.

Hiring Grubb is just hiring the guy he wanted to have the job and actually hired in the first place.

I think he was being facetious.

you are right about the "nfl coach" comment. this is a signficant move because deBoer got the guy he wanted all along and has had huge success with.

how long until russell gets the starting job?

By hiring Ryan Grubb, Dalen DeBoer hired the guy he wanted to be the offensive coordinator from the beginning of his tenure.

What a compelling argument. I'm convinced now. Bet you win lots of debates.

I'd say the pay and lack of a salary cap makes college football more appealing than the NFL.

Maybe for 1-2 programs. For many programs it means you're constantly trying to retain your roster and build your team with no ability to lock a guy in for any period of time. In addition to that, you're dealing with kids that have limited time to practice and you have to recruit HS kids who want to know what they're going to be paid.

If you're at tOSU, it may be easier. If you're at Bama or UGA, it may be easier. If you're at 95% of the schools out there, it is immeasurably more work, 99% of which is NOT why you got into coaching in the first place.

Yeah. Most staffs are dealing with about 3 QBs, 6 RBs, 6 TEs, and 8 WRs from true Freshmen to Grads transfers threatening every practice, "Get me the ball Coach or I'm gone."

Just a mess.

I feel like the paycheck kind of makes the little frustrations bearable. Prediction, coaching vacancies won't pile up because coaching CFB is hard.
