What he's done in two months is amazing. Putting together the top portal class to fill gaps and build depth, keeping and ADDING great H.S. recruits. and keeping our total HS commit # low where we can really pull numbers next year when we have a full recruiting cycle.

This class is amazingly dense with 17 of the 18 4 stars or above. Avg rating/player is #9 in the country.

And by several player accounts, it REALLY is "not like it used to be" when it comes to accountability and hard work.

Gig 'Em!

p.s. I'm convinced we have the best quarterback depth in the country, with some great young ones to boot. Lots of things to build on,

Coach was a busy man since hired. Has done a great job with coaching hires, managerial staff, recruiting staff, and players. His executive/delegation abilities show. Can't wait to see him coach 'em up.

Curios what players decommitted once Elko was hired. Not sure if players switched prior or after Elko was hired.

I'd guess that some players left when jimbo was fired but other decided to stay once jimbo was fired, or at least gave Elko a chance to convince them to stay.

I fully believe that some of the guys from the current roster that are still here now would not be had Jimbo been retained.

I also think that some of the guys that would have stayed had jimbo been retained, would have left anyway when Erob moved on to Syracuse.

Some more recruits likely would have stayed in the class, but we may have lost a couple of the ones who stuck with it.

Given the quality depth we have in the QB room, any concern we lose one in the spring transfer window?
RossWag

Agreed!

After Jimbo's firing, we lost a ton of talent to the portal, not to mention a large number of recruits de-committing. I think he did a great job holding onto as many recruits as he did and picking up a couple, and the pick up of talent in the portal was outstanding, filling holes left by our guys transferring out.

We will see how the talent level matches up, but more importantly, how good a coach we got when we get back to the gridiron.

It's entirely possible. But, both Weigman and Henderson seem pretty staunch in their commitment to A&M.

I hope you're right. With unlimited transfers I was really worried Henderson might follow Petrino to Arky. Losing Reed with stink too. I thought he looked really promising in the bowl game for a true fish with almost zero playing time.

Honestly, could not have asked for much better of a start.

It may it may not work out. But I think he's the hardest working head coach we've had in a long time.

I wouldn't say we lost a ton of talent. We lost what, 3 starters? Nolen, E Stew and Diggs. Considering their production, they have all been replaced via the portal and recruiting class to a degree. And we greatly upgraded the locker room culture.

We did lose a few commits from our class but again Elko found equivalent replacements. This is to be expected during a transition though and I'm glad he went with a smaller class rather than just filling the numbers.

We had to get all of these portal guys because Jimbo went thin in multiple areas and refused to even field 85 scholarships, while Elko currently has us well over the limit right now so we will see the cream rise to the top through spring.

Losing Reed would be a huge mistake. I would make him QB2 and have him in on certain packages like CK did with Avery Johnson

Elko gets kudos for convincing us he turned the page. And he clearly delegates well given the roster manager he brought in to help with the portal.

But we haven't even practiced yet…and that's JUST practice.

Elko is going to be a good Head Coach for A&M. One thing is for sure, no one is going to outwork him.

Yeah, i thought about that after posting. If any if you young QBs read this thread, know that "to boot" is old-man language for "in addition to".

Aint nobody looking to kick one of you to the curb.

Posted on another thread but Elko gave all the credit to his recruiting coordinator which is what a good leader does.

Absolutely. I'll be shocked if Reed isn't #2 going into the season. Henderson is the best 3rd string qb in the SEC, which is where he belongs.

I predict hottest topic this Spring (culminating in a must see Spring Game) will be "Who should be QB #2?"

Given how unlucky we were In regards to how big of a failure Jimbo was, having Elmo sitting in the wings was very very fortunate. Best possible outcome in my opinion.

His comments are not about the convo, generally.

They are about making himself feel smart visa vis his favorite pet issues.

Not surprising...smart guy who is doing his job.

Not someone who is impressed with himself and takes credit for a one off successful season that, in reality, probably wasn't much of his own doing anyway.

Is this gonna be a zoo "thing" now? Calling Elko, Elmo?

Im starting to get the vibe from Elko that aside form Nolan we kept who we wanted and he scuttled the rest. If so right on, Get the culture right and get young men you can coach.

Is there a composite rank for incoming players to programs that includes both transfers and hs recruits?

Just out of curiosity, what metric are you using to determine that what he's done is amazing? I'd like to apply that same metric to the other schools in the SEC to evaluate whether or not we've gained any ground.

One thing is for certain: if Elko isn't successful, it won't be because he hasn't worked his ass off.

Giving Jimbo that golden parachute was an extremely dumb idea. It was almost like motivation for him NOT to work hard. Why should he? Get lazy, get fired, go fishing with your 85 million dollars or whatever it was.

This.

Jimbo was literally incentivized to turn out like he did. His assistants did all of the heaving lifting with recruiting and Jimbo was only good at swooping in at the end and closing the deal. At least with this the cupboard isn't left as bare as when Sumlin got fired. Hopefully Elko can do something with the talent that stayed and what he's brought in.
