"The attorneys general of Tennessee and Virginia filed a lawsuit against the NCAA on Wednesday, a day after the University of Tennessee's chancellor ripped the association for investigating the school for potential recruiting violations related to name, image and likeness compensation rules.

The lawsuit filed in the Eastern District of Tennessee claims the NCAA is "enforcing rules that unfairly restrict how athletes can commercially use their name, image and likeness at a critical juncture in the recruiting calendar."

"These anticompetitive restrictions violate the Sherman Act, harm the States and the welfare of their athletes, and should be declared unlawful and enjoined.""

Baker's proposal is closer to P2 than Virginia suing the NCAA from the ACC it can't get out of.

Someone is going to buy big time football 35-65 teams. Schools will have to agree on minimum financial agreements to be in the conference ,negotiate Commercial right deals and play for a championship. The other teams will form a separate division and do the same thing including playing 2 games a year with the super division. Everyone will have a legitimate pathway to playoffs and championship.

Complete waste of time by those states AG. Waste of resources, effort, and energy. I'd tell the NCAA to kick rocks. They're no longer relevant to what goes on in college athletics.

Telling the NCAA to kick rocks is literally what they are doing.

But you can't just scrawl that on a piece of paper with a crayon, or send it via text message.

UNC and most recently L$U basically told the NCAA to rollover. The NCAA has no teeth with the large programs.

this.

been saying for years that every school the ncaa comes after should tell them to F off, only do it in an offical capacity not just say F U.

This. Pretty sure there's a bylaw somewhere stating they're exempt from NCAA regulation, so what rules are they violating?

They could sacrifice recruits on the altar of whatever abhorrent god they serve, on tv, in the middle of campus, and they will NEVER be investigated.

Ever.

Oh, I get that. If it were up to me, I'd send a lengthy, yet polite and direct letter, outlying all of the fallacies and falsehoods that institution has tried to run as some overlord of college athletics on behalf of my university and conference as whole. I'd make sure those chumps were shown everything dumb they have done or tried to enforce

And end it with a "bleep you, but have nice day".

Or focus on reforming the idiotic NCAA into something that is merely moronic.

The NCAA IS the member institutions but they have built a bureaucratic disaster that rewards bad performance and behavior…with lots of money…

There's been more public information on t.u. enticing recruits with NIL than any other school. The pancake club where every tu offensive linemen get 50K every year. How is that within the proper guidelines of NIL? What a complete joke the NCAA has become.

So NIL is just handing incoming players their company truck?
BMX Bandit

huh?

can you answer the question I asked?

how did texas violate NCAA rules? the NIL deals have given all these cars and money to players. that is now allowed by ncaa.

every school is telling recruits the "we can't promise you any NIL deals, wink wink nudge nudge" bit.

what TN and VA are doing is trying to get that to go away. So a school can straight up say to a high school player "come here and we will get $100k and a raptor"

Yeah, and they are smiling in a picture with it after they get the keys. "Name, Image, Likeness" achieved.

What becomes of that photo is up to various people in the collective who paid for it.

How many of those Tenn investigations were just UT turning themselves in to get out of paying a coaching buyout? Those shouldn't count.

It's gonna get real interesting when "collectives" of uber-rich people buy out directorships of entities like the TMF and comparable orgs, change the rules and consolidate ownership of today's college football teams. If you don't think this is coming, you are asleep.

That would not surprise me if this were left unchecked. However, I don't think it will be left unchecked.

As other posters have alluded to, by the end of next year, you will have national legislation that allows the NCAA (or more likely some other new entity) to create rules, regulating all of these things in order to get around antitrust laws.

Charles Allen Wright left a secret bylaw exempting the sips from any NCAA punishment.

lol. Stop defending those goofballs. We on here aren't NIL experts knowing all the bylaws, but I'd bet it's safe to assume they're breaking the rules if Tennessee, Florida, and Florida State are given Sips payments are major in comparison. Ffs, Florida didn't even pay the kid and FSU's was a car-ride…not even a car. Lol

Sips' official NIL funds are even bragging on Twitter about paying women's soccer players, track, volleyball, and basketball. Let alone overpaying for football players.

how is asking a poster to explain his post defending anyone?

There is nothing wrong or against the rules on "sips official NIL fund" bragging about what it pays players.

texas isn't giving "every new recruit a new truck" the NIL fund is giving enrolled students trucks, etc. you admit you aren't an NIL expert, but at least get a basic understanding before tying to argue with those that do understand the rules.

and "rules" is used in the loosest sense. its really just "guidance"

More color:

"A U.S. District Court Memorandum filed on Tuesday said the plaintiffs, Tennessee and the Commonwealth of Virginia, failed to demonstrate that they would suffer irreparable harm if the restraining order was not put in place. U.S. District Judge Clifton Corker's wrote that the plaintiffs could be fully compensated by monetary damages after a trial if the states win.

Additionally, Corker wrote that "considering the evidence currently before the Court, [the] Plaintiff's are likely to succeed on the merits of their claim under the Sherman Act.""
