No one is mad at them "making money".

EVERYONE is mad that an 18 year old thinks he can hold a coach, donors and a university hostage over some imaginary perceived value.

Let's just have incentive based contracts already and teach these kids a real lesson about commitment and required performance.

Funniest thing about this all: a 17 year old kid who has never paid taxes in his life is now in the 39% tax bracket and owes the IRS $390,000 as a Freshman in college, but he spent all that money on a high rise apartment in downtown LA and a fancy new car because they were so deserving, and totally prepared for financial independence.

I think he just didn't ant to have to re-recruit his roster every year and deal with the portal/nil and the way you now have to manage a college roster.

it used to just be recruit ythe hs kids and then develop them.

now it's: recruit the hs kids, re-recruit them so they don't leave for the portal, play them before they are ready so they don't leave for the portal, negtiate better nil deals for them so they don't go to the portal, go get players from the portal and still develop your players but have less time to do it.

it's an all-consuming, complete headache now to mamage a college footbal lroster. you now need GM's portal managers etc....it's crazy

at 73 who the hell wants to do all that anymore.
Meanwhile, Elko, literally hiring a GM to do exactly the roster management part of the job and getting ahead of the game

How is it an "imaginary" value if people are paying it?

The whole "they may owe taxes and aren't financially ready" is the most disingenuous argument there. All of these schools have financial advisors in place. If a kid does not take advantage of that, that's their problem. Not yours.

You are just mad people are making money for something you perceive as not worthy of being paid for.

So, NIL has been in full swing 1 year (operating for two):

In this year:

- Saban retired, Harbaugh is likely to leave the National Champions for the NFL, Kirby is possibly heading to the NFL, DeBoer left the #2 team. Top coaches are getting out because they see the dumpster fire coming.
- 1300 transfers all last year, this year had over 1000 in a single day
- 8700 players transferred between 8/22-5/23
- These college kids think they also hold the billionaire NFL owners hostage (see Caleb Williams)

But yes, everything is totally fine and NIL has had no effects.

ORRRRR, it's so bad already that the US Government has introduced FOUR separate bills to deal with these issues in the last 6 months.

What bills deal with NIL? I'm not aware of any that will stop or limit NIL as we currently see it. Would just be prohibition on tobacco & alcohol etc ads

This is heck of a strawman here:

Yea, like saying voter ID is racist because minorities are too dumb to get IDs…

Even if they are financially dumb and don't pay taxes, has ZERO bearing on a fan so quit whining.

Alabama literally had a car dealership (owned partially by Nick Saban) program for recruits prior to NIL.

Anyone saying Saban recruited honestly is just unwilling to accept facts. All his cronies learned his tactics as well, hence why all Sabanites are in the top of recruiting ranks year in and out. They would have outed him years ago, except it would have also pointed the fingers back at them too.

I suspected Saban of using illegal tactics back when he was at LSU. But, he wasn't the only one and it's all legal now. Combining NIL with the transfer portal does create the equivalent of free agency in the pros though.

He wasn't successful in the NFL.

He knew the secret to his success in college evaporated when NIL kicked in.

Here you have a Dec 3, 2023 article with very well paid conference commissioners wringing their hands over individual students being "taken" by unscrupulous people and asking the U.S. Congress to establish college football as a utility and give the rich commissioners power to further regulate for their own benefit what student athletes make from their own name, age, and likeness deals…

Color me skeptical about the wolves tending the poor, helpless sheep…

Plus both parties are too busy virtue signaling to worry about college athletics…other than to establish new concessions they can sell for lobbying contributions to rent seekers to permanently re-elect them…

Saban said nothing about nil being a factor in his decision in his interview the other day.

Harbaugh has never mentioned nil as a factor in his moving to the nfl. The fact that he won the NC during this age of nil tells me he's doing quite well managing it.

Deboer moving to another college has nothing to do with nil. That's the most absurd thing you posted. So on the one hand, Saban is leaving Bama because of NIL, and yet Deboer is headed to Bama despite the very thing that caused Nick to retire. Lol

NIL hasn't affected Kirby's ability to recruit or win. If he goes to the NFL, it's because he wants to be there.

Harbaugh is a big proponent of revenue sharing with players. But he's leaving because of NIL. Yeah, that makes sense.

Now that he can't just pay under the table he will lose his recruiting advantage. He has had the most talented team recruiting wise for a decade. Now that TU and Georgia can compete with the payments Alabama has been providing for years he is running away. Good riddance.
I don't think bama has had to pay players since Saban got there. I think 2002 was the last time they got caught. If you go to Bama and can earn a spot on the roster, you will get even better than you already are, and you're probably going to make significant money in the NFL. I believe that is how they recruited. They had a recruiting advantage because nobody else put as many people and as many first round draft picks into the NFL.

Sounds like we agree that NIL eliminates a lot of that advantage. We just disagree on whether or not they cheated to get where they are.

Bama has been buying cars and paying players for a long time. It didn't slow down or change because of Saban's success. Too many players that could have started at other successful programs. They got their cars and money and played for Saban.
