According to 24/7, we have the #3 transfer class in the nation. Elko doing good work with these transfers he's landing, hopefully they help us have a good season next year.

Lots of 3 star incoming, some 5 star outgoing.

We lost 5-star DBs? Who? the 5-stars we lost weren't very productive and overpriced. And you act like the 3-stars we've brought in thru the portal weren't sought after by major programs. Lol

What 5 stars are outgoing at DB?

I agree that we've lost a lot of good players to the portal, but we've also gained some. If it a perfect trade-off? Probably not, but I'm sure Elko will build a good team here in Aggieland.

As far as transfer rating, we've lost 7 4-5 stars and signed 5 4-5 stars.

Two more and we are even as far as stars.

I'm usually pretty cynical but I must say I'm pretty happy with the roster so far, sure we lost some but so has everyone…we still kept an important core and added highly sought after transfers

in terms of ranking coming out of high school, it's not even close. in terms of productivity, maturity, character, and position of need, i think the team will be better off come this fall. (how much better than 7-and-6? we'll see.)

We've been counting stars since Sumlin's days and it hasn't amounted to much….From here on out I'm counting wins at the end of the year instead of stars on signing day…

After 2-3 yrs of college ball, do HS star rankings still matter? You have to re-adjust based on how players have grown and developed. Kind of like an employer asking for your transcript / college GPA after 10-20 yrs in the workforce.

A hard working 3-star with a chip on his shoulder probably becomes a much better football player than an entitled 5 star knucklehead. I think we all would prefer 5-star with a great attitude and work ethic than a 3-star, but I think Fisher chased too many 5-star knuckleheads.

I would say they didn't matter at all with JFF and Mike Evans.

I think you would actually want the highly productive players from smaller schools in the transfer portal as opposed to a highly ranked recruit who didn't produce at a larger school.

If you scout the smaller schools well enough that is where you will find a bunch of kids who were missed out of high school but still end up in the NFL. The transfer portal now allows those players mobility to go up a level prior to the NFL. I think in most cases highly ranked high school kids who didn't produce on their first stop are unlikely to pan out in their second stop.

When you recruit high school kids you definitely want 4/5 stars as there is a direct correlation between stars and winning on the macro level. I bet that doesn't end up being true for the portal, time will tell.

To be fair, JFF was a knucklehead 3 star that played like a 6 star.

Back to the realization that player ability is not static. As players develop and age, the best players when aged 15-17 may be different by the time they become 20-22.

I get what you are saying and I quit premium because I got tired of getting excited about players that were high star-rated but were either non-contributors or poor contributors when they got here.

(And before anyone says "it's Jimbo" or whatever, you start to notice that a lot of guys that go elsewhere suck too. Like if I were to put percentages on it, it's about 1/3 of the highly rated guys are studs and 2/3 are duds).

That being said… you can't deny that most of the best players were top recruits. And the number of three stars that pan out are pretty low. The exceptions get lots of attention, but there are a lot of three stars, and probably 80%+ of them struggle to even get significant game time let alone become stars. Most have to go to lesser programs to even get time.

Jimbo's transfer class was ranked #26 last year with 15 recruits. This year, Elko has the #3 class with 12 recruits so far. Yes this inspires optimism.

Transfer 3 stars are not the same as high school 3 stars. By now, they've had a chance to prove they are better (or worse) than their ratings.

Look, if all you need is a Star rating I can crap in a box, slap a 5-Star Rating on it; I have the extra time. But if you'd rather have a quality player, why not try a proven contributor previously labeled as a 3-Star and see how it goes?

That begs another question that may require NCAA intervention or something of that sort.
If you are paying a guy $100K - $1M in NIL, could he pay for his own schooling and free up a scholarship for someone else and circumvent the 85 scholarship limit?

If you had about 20 high dollar NIL guys doing that, you could really load up on HS recruits to develop and smaller school portal guys looking more for better opportunities at a lower NIL cost to really add depth.

How many 4 or 5 star players weren't in our 2 deep this year? That suggests that no ranking system is perfect and can account for smarts, hustle and work ethic and game knowledge.

You look at it that way.

I look at it as hiring a new employee with several years work experience. I'm not so interested in their college GPA, I'm interested in what they've done in their field.

I'd rather have Juniors and Seniors that have had playing experience and shown development over their college career than potentially good 5 stars coming out of HS.

Football is a meritocracy. If you are unmotivated and can't play, the results will show on the filed.

Elko is doing a good job on signing guys that have had years in the weight room, studying film, and being acclimated to the pace of the game. Hopefully he can get them to play well at Kyle........

I'd love to see him sign Marshall and Harris. Pretty much no risk.....If they pan out, it's a great story of 2nd chances and watching kids become adults. If not, oh well the kids shot themselves in the foot again.
