Bottom line, on Washington's last series, regardless of what happened prior, a first down isn't even needed.
Better use of time and you can effectively run the clock down and not have to punt.
Really isn't that complicated. They used up 3 and 4 seconds of clock on first and second down.
Here is how you do it:
First down QB rolls out and eats up more time on the clock. Can even run backwards some if he wants.
Second down, same thing. Clock should now be at something closer to 55 seconds or so instead of 1:02.
Third down same thing but now out of TOs so after this play is run there should be more than 48-49 seconds left before 4th down.
Now on fourth down you do not punt, you do the same thing only now you have the QB throw the ball as high and far as he can out of bounds. The clock doesn't stop until the ball hits something out of bounds (Texas remembers this from their Nebraska game. This would t happen until the clock hits zero, game over.
