You're not in a demographic meant to understand the outrage. It's that simple, and you kind of have to cast your thoughts a few hops wider (significantly more effort...) to really grasp it.
But don't worry, it's not your place to disrupt the system. It benefits you, and you're not irrational to, even disingenuously, posit a rational defense of it.
I think it all comes down to which fanbases were the biggest within their region at some point in time (ca. 2000). Those fanbases became the perennially-favored, in literally every facet of the sport. Fanbases like ours and fsu's, which were close seconds at that time, got stuck in the role of perennially-screwed-over. Both types of role assignments benefit ESPN's bottom line.
However, the perennially-screwed-over fanbases have to sit here and watch all kinds of passion and potential go to waste in order to protect the bottom line of ESPN et al. We'd be irrational to perpetuate the system.
