A power 5 program literally just called him. There is no basis for your comment about X's and O's. A much more likely reason is that coaches don't normally get their start at coordinator at a place like A&M. Look at Elko's resume, his first DC gig wasn't at ND.

If you were hired to be the head coach at Texas A&M, would you hire someone to be your DC who has no previous experience as a DC? I wouldn't.
