An incentive-based contract would be average BASE salary. Not top salary. But top salary if you win something huge like the SEC or the national championship. Something in between if you go 11-2 or 10-3.

Some people were mocking me the other day when I said we shouldn't be hiring anybody without an incentives-based contract. They were saying no one good would accept it. Anyone who wouldn't accept it is proving they have no confidence in their ability to win. And no future coach, regardless of how how accomplished, should ever get a deal like Jimbo. That was the biggest financial catastrophe in college sports history, and the recipient of the windfall was totally unworthy. It makes me sick to think about it.

I'm back to tell you that you you are still wrong. The incentives are almost irrelevant. The extension, buyout and the duration are what killed us with Jimbo.

If Elko actually wins a natty we are going to give him a bonus then fall all over ourselves to give him a raise and extension and any other favorable terms he chooses.

Incentives are for employees who would not otherwise be motivated to achieve some goal. Elko has a strong incentive just by looking at what Saban, Smart and Dabo make.
