Good info on the search. Honestly this is the first time I have ever been worried over a coaching hire. Past hires were exciting but not worrying. This one we either take off from a good starting point or we crumble and start all over with next coach. That worries me.

It's the last half of the video. But basically sounds like we are looking at a sitting head coach.
This is the first true national search Bily has seen A&M do for HC.
Names like Liepold, DeBoer, Smith OrSt, Fisch Ari, Day, Dabo.
They have interviewed a ton of people and the interest has been huge.
Billy said he pays attention out west. Lots of stuff to sift through.

(23:13) Timeline wise, do you still think they're on track by December 4th?

BL: Yeah I do. I don't want to put that hard date there but I still feel confident they'll get it done. I think they'll get it done prior to that. I think they'll get it done days prior to that. It wouldn't surprise me at all if A&M took the field in Baton Rouge and Ross Bjork and those involved knew who their coach was. Not saying it's guaranteed but the way their plan is and the timeline they're feeling, I think they'd love to have someone hired a week from now.

(25:00) How wide a net was cast? We've heard it reported some big time names have been approached.

BL: I think in a lot of instances it's big time names approaching A&M. …

(30:26) BL: We'll talk more names this week but I think Elko will absolutely hang in til the end. Leipold is a guy they've looked at consistently. In my opinion, he started the process as a guy they were particularly interested in. That means nothing in terms of who they'll hire. Obviously interviewed Traylor. They've talked to plenty of people. I do keep an eye out West. I look at guys like Jonathan Smith. Jedd Fisch. … I'm just paying attention out West. I'm looking at someone like a Matt Rhule, who's been at Nebraska for a year so you kinda don't assume you can get him. What if he says "When I was in Texas, what I did at Baylor, what could I do at A&M?" I know he's been there only a year. … Then there's the big names. If a hire like this is going to happen, it's not like a hand picked "Scott loves Jimbo". Woodward had his eyes on Jimbo and had been laying the groundwork for months prior and wasn't shy about saying it if you were listening. There's not that this year. If it comes from one of these big names, it'll be completely stealth. It'll happen to emerge in a couple days leading up to it and shock college football. You gotta look at coaches who might not be happy where they're at.

Someone told me the other day, I don't know if this is true or not, that Mack Brown told Dabo if he had to do it over again, he would have left Texas sooner. Just because at some point, the work is done and they don't appreciate you like they used to. You're still young enough to get a fresh start. I don't know if that's true. That's third hand info. It does make sense. You know he's feeling on some level that type of way at Clemson. You know if Ryan Day loses to Michigan, he's gotta be saying "Look at my damn resume." And look at USC and Lincoln. If you're A&M, you'd have to listen, say what does that look like, why did you have the season you just had? That's one of those names as well. There's a few of them out there. Kalen DeBoer is absolutely still a target. They're rolling towards the playoffs, if not more.

Of the names I've said, the point I'm making is they could go really big on this thing or more of an up-and-comer. I go back to Florida State hiring Norvell(Memphis) and Florida hiring Napier(Louisiana). That type of hire or they go big. It's gonna be fascinating. Florida went Mullen and then Napier. Those are two wild extremes. A&M is living kinda in that same world that Florida has been in. This is the first time they've done a real search for the football coach that I can remember. Like there's not a clear cut favorite. They wanted Sumlin. Sherman, there was no search. Fran's fired then during the A&M/Texas game, the name coming out was Mike Sherman. That was in no way a coast-to-coast search. They promoted RC. Is it the first real search since Jackie? It's a lot of fun, a lot of pressure to get it right. …

… They're absolutely not gonna be held hostage by a contract. They have no intention of giving a head coach every ounce of power, every ounce of the contract favoring them which is why I think closing on one of the biggest of the bigs will be a little bit harder.

A couple of comments:
1. I hope you guys are right about lsu's defense being bad. I'm not sold on that at all. We'll see.
2. Regarding the search and hire of Jackie Sherrill.
As I recall "Bum" Bright, BMA+++, really wanted Bo Schembechler.
Bo turned us down but suggested we talk to the HC at Pittsburg by the name of Jackie Sherrill
As I recall he was the first HC w/ a million $$ contact and the outrage was off the charts.
Don't recall the exact details, but he was worth it. Sad it didn't work out longer then it did.
He elevated the program and school big time. Great memories and my favorite quote by him...
"Get your licks in now cause we're going to be real good."
