Many on Texags accuse Jimbo of being a dinosaur. Yet many of us seem to live in 2002.
There is no more Fran dumpster fire potential. There is no half decade long rebuild. There's no more "getting HIS guys in". The next coach at A&M be it after Jimbo's retirement or firing will be hired with a portal plan in place; that should be a MAJOR factor in the hiring process. That person can bring in 30-35 guys (23-24 year old FCS and G5 stars brought in with the allure of money and platform) over two seasons and be ready contend in year 2. Lane Kiffin and Brian Kelly have done so.
The point is you're not really losing a lot by letting Jimbo have next season. Rock bottom just isn't that low for us. You can be back to contention quickly. Even if you think there's a small chance at making the playoff next season with him, you gotta keep him. I would argue there's more than a small chance we could correct into a 10-2 season next year. And that puts us in position to HOST a playoff game.
At this point, the playoff is the mandate. I don't know what future there is to sell beyond next season. The greatest recruiting class ever will mostly be gone by the end of next year. If he makes the playoff and we win a home playoff game; GREAT we had our greatest ever season and lets build on it with Fisher. If he fails into 9-4 or something next year, move on and you only have one real throwaway season. High upside, high downside; and an easy decision.
