Giving Jimbo Next Year is High Floor and High Ceiling

Many on Texags accuse Jimbo of being a dinosaur. Yet many of us seem to live in 2002.

There is no more Fran dumpster fire potential. There is no half decade long rebuild. There's no more "getting HIS guys in". The next coach at A&M be it after Jimbo's retirement or firing will be hired with a portal plan in place; that should be a MAJOR factor in the hiring process. That person can bring in 30-35 guys (23-24 year old FCS and G5 stars brought in with the allure of money and platform) over two seasons and be ready contend in year 2. Lane Kiffin and Brian Kelly have done so.

The point is you're not really losing a lot by letting Jimbo have next season. Rock bottom just isn't that low for us. You can be back to contention quickly. Even if you think there's a small chance at making the playoff next season with him, you gotta keep him. I would argue there's more than a small chance we could correct into a 10-2 season next year. And that puts us in position to HOST a playoff game.

At this point, the playoff is the mandate. I don't know what future there is to sell beyond next season. The greatest recruiting class ever will mostly be gone by the end of next year. If he makes the playoff and we win a home playoff game; GREAT we had our greatest ever season and lets build on it with Fisher. If he fails into 9-4 or something next year, move on and you only have one real throwaway season. High upside, high downside; and an easy decision.

We can't let Jimbo go because our powers that be don't know how to negotiate worth a damn. But if consistency and mediocrity is what we're aiming for, then we found it.

Have a look at the latest revelation with Haynes King if you have any further questions regarding Jimbo' capabilities.

Here's what will be interesting. The portal is about to be active. How many of our guys enter the portal will tell us a lot about if the team has given up on Jimbo.

Agree. This is a sophomore led team that will, for the most part, remain intact. Might lose 3 to draft, one early.
5 star Qb, 5 star loaded D-line, O-line intact & entering 3 yr as starters. Excellent receivers & RB's. Skill players all over the place.
Convince Cooper to return for Sr year, hit the portal hard for select players to fill a few holes & build depth.
These kids will be talented, grown men next year, hungry to win something. Pre-season they will be ranked.
2024 Could be a very good season.

We are about to lose three more from our recruiting class.

No telling how many to the portal.

Keeping a lame duck coach is the quickest way to kill a program.

Actually the quote from WC was
"I'm an optimist, I see no use being anything else".
Facts: 31 freshmen played last year.
This is a sophomore dominated team - age should be around 19 years old.
Most experts acknowledge we are a very talented , yet young, team.

One more quote " argue for your limits & they are yours". IE, you'll get what you want which in this case is just another house fire.

Offseason optimism has already started

If he is back next year, I like the idea of it being playoff or fired. Finishing in the top 12 should be very achievable for this program, but then again, Jimbo has only managed it once

here's a big problem though...

very talented 19 and 20 year-olds...can be cancelled out by opponents with 22 & 23 & 24-year old players via the portal / graduation / free COVID year

giving Sumlin an extra year in 2017...cost A&M any shot of winning the recruiting battle for Jaylen Waddle from Houston

a true 5-star WR / kick returner...game-changer...game-breaker, etc..,that the Jimbo era has so desperately needed

Had Waddle chosen A&M there is no guarantee that he would have been the same Waddle that we saw at Bama. If we fired Sumlin prior to the 2017 season, would we have even landed Jimbo? Who knows

What scares me the most is that next year gives us the opportunity to completely regress to Old A&M where Jimbo goes 7-5 but manages to upset the sips and the BMAs are now perfectly content with him again because they get to talk **** to their BIL at the country club

I totally disagree with everything in the OP other than the fact that the next guy can quickly rebuild via the portal.

The logic of the OP can be applied to every season remaining on his contract. It's basically advocating embracing the underperformance and failure.

Sure there's a small chance he gets us to the playoffs next year. But the chances are far better with a number of potential replacements.

It annoys me that so many don't see the urgent need to put our best foot forward next season with the sips coming to Kyle.

That'd be better than 7-5 and a loss to the sips, which keeping Jimbo would help come to fruition.

I'm not following how that tells us anything about improvement

Jimbo is dog**** & if he's not fired this team remains dog****

Only thing portal activity will tell is wether or not players are content going nowhere in jimbo's dog**** system

As sophomores now, our #1,#1 recruiting class dressed for their 1st college football game 15 months ago. Normally you hope none have to see the field that first year.
31 played.
10 months from now they'll start their 3 season as college juniors with 2 years training & experience behind them.
They''ll be good & experienced.
Why blow it all up before we get to see them in 2024?
Doesn't make sense not to be an optimist, considering the options…..
does it!??

While true…we didn't have the luxury of some of them staying in the bench because they were better.

Shouldn't they already be good?

Being a realist is probably better than being an optimist. Being an optimist these last two years is a big part of why people are so angry.

After a 9-1 (8-1 SEC) and No. 4 finish in 2020, I really thought Jimbo Fisher had transformed us from a usually mediocre SEC team to a consistently good SEC team. Then, we started 7-2 (4-2 SEC) in 2021 after 4 consecutive wins over against Alabama, Missouri, South Carolina, and Auburn. At that point, Jimbo was 33-12 and 25-12 against Power 5 teams, including 21-10 in SEC games. Several negative trends began with a 29-19 loss at Ole Miss on 11/13/2021 and have continued into this season.

1. After a 7-2 (4-2 SEC) start in 2021, we lost our last 2 SEC games at Ole Miss and at LSU to finish 8-4 (4-4 SEC). We pulled out of the Gator Bowl against Wake Forest because of Covid-19 issues and injuries.

2. We are 11-13 in our last 24 games, including a 17-14 loss to Appalachian State at home on 9/10/2022.

3. We have lost 12 of our last 18 games against Power 5 teams, including 11 of 16 SEC games. In those 18 games, Jimbo is 4-3 (3-3 SEC) at home, 2-0 in neutral site games against Arkansas, and 0-9 (0-8 SEC and loss at Miami) on the road.

4. We have lost 9 consecutive road games, and we have not won a road game since a 35-14 win over Missouri on 10/16/2021.

5. We have lost 6 consecutive road games against SEC West teams, and we have not won a road game against an SEC West team since a 31-20 win at Auburn on 12/5/2020.

6. We have lost 3 consecutive games to Ole Miss, including 2 in Oxford, and we have not beaten Ole Miss since a 24-17 road win on 10/19/2019. Of course, the 2020 home game against Ole Miss was postponed several times before it was ultimately cancelled.

We are headed for a 7-5 finish (4-4 SEC) with wins over Mississippi State and FCS Abilene Christian and a loss at LSU. If that happens, we will carry a 10-game road losing streak into next year and go for 2 consecutive years without a single road win.

Jimbo needs to beat Texas and finish at least 9-3 to stay beyond next year. In 2024, we have home games against Notre Dame, LSU, Missouri, and Texas and road games at Auburn, Florida, Mississippi State, and South Carolina. I hope we win all 7 home games, beat Arkansas at Jerry World, and win at least 2 of those road games for a 10-2 (6-2 SEC) finish, which might be good enough for a CFP spot. With our toughest games at home and a favorable road schedule, there is no excuse to finish worse than 9-3.
