If not Jimbo, who?

1st off, it's not happening unless he somehow gets his deal re-negotiated like Harbaugh did and then fails next year. I really want him to succeed and be everything he was supposed to be (much like you all), but here are having to entertain the thought.

Outside of the common wish of Elko, who is realistically a fit? I've seen Kingsbury as a name, but he has really failed as an HC in both stops (Will need a successful OC or G5 HC run first). Of that thinking, there's also Dan Lanning and that "who's the next one like him" or him. He ain't leaving, so who's that next young OC crushing it at the level he did at a top tier program? I also don't see another mega poach like the likes of what LSU did to ND unless the BMAs wanna keep paying even more money…

So that leads me to ask. If not Jimbo, who?

TLDR; Shortlist (Update V5, 11-06-23):
(Strikethrough the unrealistic options/non-fits)

RealTalk if you can hire SabanAI for OC/DC, we might be on to something. It's cost effective for the BMAs!

We can easily replace jimbo and our coordinators with ai. Hire the best position and unit coaches in the business to actually coach kids up then let it run. Replace the d coordinator, o coord, and HC and keep massive chunk of salary for position coaches and nil deals. Maybe keep someone on the sideline as a human face for the kids.

Elko. He should be the guy. Need an answer for the offensive line though. That's the major reason we will continue to lose.

I really think we should push hard for Kirby Smart. We have a much better school overall than Georgia. Facilities are the best in the nation, and we have the deepest pockets to recruit players in NIL. Kirby smart saw that first hand when we out recruited him the previous years and considering we don't have the win history to get much better. We had the top ranked class in the nation and we all know that was bought. Our fan base is the best in the nation, I really believe we can get any coach we set our sights on. It's time we do it.

Jonathan Taylor at Oregon state is doing a great job. OSU was 1-11 the year before he took over. OSU is a really tough place to win consistently due to limited resources and having to compete with Oregon's Nike money/PR.

A large B10 or SEC school will probably go after him soon.

Kirby is home. He ain't leaving UGA until they fire him and that ain't gonna be anytime soon.

It's a sad state of things when Lanning and Elko are tier one. Neither should be the head coach here.

Nick Saban couldn't win here, nor will Kirby Smart. Every coach we've ever hired was an extreme success at their other stops. They got here and they forthwith stuck their heads in their rectums. What makes any of us think Lombardi could win here?

We should try something completely different. We could do no worse, but save the school millions of dollars.

I'd feel better winning three games a year and paying no more than $1MM doing it than paying $9MM and only winning 5-7 per year. The former is far less embarrassing than the latter.

Lanning is reckless and it's been often at Oregon. He might end up good. But he isn't ready for an SEC program. What has Mike Elko done? 1.5 years as a head coach. Coaching in one of the weakest power 5 out there. He won nine games last year in a crappy league. Most likely wins 7 in the SEC. You don't move off Jimbo without a clear path forward. Just changing out coaches isn't the answer. Jimbo has performed better like his first three years. Unless the recruiting crashes you wait till there is a clear answer and let the talent build up.

Well, Lincoln Riley is finding out that life ain't that great out at USC. Now maybe he can make that work but when you start playing games in Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, etc..... in November, the bloom might be off the B1G rose in short order. IDK.

Regardless of who it is, you make it a 5-year deal with a standards and incentives clause. You pay whoever it is what they are worth but not a penny more. You meet the standards/incentive clause for a given year, you get a 1 year extension and performance stipends. Any coach worth anything won't balk at an incentive based contract because it is a results oriented business.
I know nothing!
Seamaster
How long do you want to ignore this user?
We should not have fired RC when we did.

We should not have fired Sherman when we did.

Apart from that, the critical mistakes have been giving huge extensions for mediocre results.

We're stuck with Jimbo for at least another 2-3 years after this year. Firing him and paying that buyout would be criminal.

His first three seasons...

9-4
8-5
9-1

He finished year three of a 10 year 75,000,000 contract. Was he doing great? No. Not really. No conference titles. No playoff appearances. He was doing pretty good, I think. 2020 was a good result but really, he was already being flat out PAID. I'd say in 2020 we got our money's worth but not deserving of what we gave him after!

And its been downhill from there.

We'll be lucky to get to 6-6.

Next year will be more of the same.

And the year after.

And the year after.

Maybe at the end of all of this we should do things a little differently. Rather than finding some huge name coach and paying them max money for max time, lets find some less-proven options that...

A) Want to be here not simply because we're holding a huge bag of money
B) Have something to prove
C) Willing to accept a contract that's fair but not obscene (something in the 2-3 mm range) for 10 years...
D) Willing to bet on themselves and take an incentive-heavy contract (that 2-3 inflates to 7-10 mm per year if we do well)
E) Willing to accept an enormous buy out (to Texas A&M) if any other school wants to hire him away

None of them will work unless there's a buffer or two between them and the meddling money misfits.

We need to let the coach run the football program, period.

They don't need to also play politician and have to stroke off every ego that writes a big check and feels like their opinion should be heard.

JFC.

How do you define a "clear answer"? A coach fresh off a national championship somewhere else that we immediately poach? Get ****ing real dude. Do you live your life with this lack of vision and calculated risk taking?

The criteria for our next hire should be a younger guy who has shown the ability to build a team that succeeds when they shouldn't. Elko at Duke is a great example. So is the Kansas guy, the Louisville guy, the Oregon State guy. I'm not advocating for anyone in particular, but our only hope at success is to identify a promising leader THAT TAKES THE NEXT STEP at Texas A&M. There are no risk-free hires. Jimbo was as close to a "clear answer" that exists; has this experience taught you nothing?

I see this mentioned a lot but no one ever provides any specifics.

Serious question: How exactly are BMAs meddling in the program? From the outside, it looks like Jimbo has complete control over recruiting, rosters, play-calling, lineups, etc., etc.
