Here is how I would structure a contract for a HC:

Something like...

Base: $2.750M/yr
Reach 6 wins: +$1M
Wins 7,8,9: +$750k each
Reach 10 wins: +$1.5M (this is now $7.5 million)
Wins 11, 12: +$1M each
Win division: +$500k ($10M total)
Win SEC Championship: +$1M
Win a CFP game: +$1M
Win title: +$2M ($14-15M total)

Further Bonuses: win your P5 ooc game +$250k
Beat tu: $1M
Win National Coach of Year +$250k
Have Heisman Trophy Winner: eh something
Have top ten ranked offense/defense: $500k per side, double for the DC or OC.

Rolling 7 year contract so buyout is still ridiculous $19.25M as we are wont to do.

Win and you bank and we are happy. Crap year you get more than enough to survive in CStat but no gnashing of collective Aggie teeth. Maybe year 1 we guarantee $5.5M.

Fire away.

Good in theory but not in our world today.

why would a coach who can get 8-10 million guaranteed be interested in an incentive laden contract with a base of 2.75 million. i am assuming of course that we're stilll going after a top guy at another big time school. while i would gladly jump at this opportunity i don't know that another ball coach would or at least not one we are looking at. could be wrong but just my two cents.

as a further observation it's sad that a college football coach getting paid 2-3 million a year is chump change. crazy times.

Agree, maybe base is set too low... I'm also willing to take on some up and comers that would find these numbers plenty good compared to their prior school.

This is a great idea. I propose:

Base salary of $2.5 million.

Win the SEC, get an extra $1 million.

Win a national championship, get 100% of the A&M Athletic Department's revenue for the entire fiscal year.

Win 2 nattys in a row, get all of the funds that are in the possession of the 12th Man Foundation.

Win 3 nattys in a row, get the entire Texas A&M University endowment (currently $18.24 billion).

If you don't want to pay the market rate, then you are relegated to gambling on a longshot, who will demand a raise to market rate (and a long term extension with a huge buyout) as soon as he has some good results. If you want to win, you have to pay.

Perfect. Someone send this post to Jimmy Sexton. I'm sure he is a huge fan of incentive laden contracts. When you want something you think other people want too you generally don't get bogged down with the negative implications of the contract. Jimbo has what has become a standard contract for big time coaches in CFB. Maybe that changes but I doubt it.

It won't attract anyone of quality when they have guarantees elsewhere. But sure, put yourself at a disadvantage. It usually works out.

Jimmy Sexton will soon do a press release about "Texas A&M is looking into a buyout and they are targeting _____" (Norvell, Deion, Josh Heupel, etc). It has to be at a school that could come close to matching an A&M salary and have a coach that is winning enough games that the school wants to retain them. It can't be a Sun Belt or Mac school that lacks the money.

Coach will get a salary boost as AD and fans panic unnecessarily.

Colt 45 should be the drink of choice for Jimmy Sexton.

The handwringing over money that none of you are tasked with paying is weird.

OP, since we are just discussing. My question would be what coaches out there do you think?????
1. We would offer such a contract? I mean I know certain coaches like Deion are out, so who do you think?
2. What coaches out there would entertain such an offer??
3. And, would they do as well as Jimbo? Remember it is the SEC and it is A&M. Who would do as good?

Many questions about "taking a risk on an unknown". Well, thus far, bringing in a "proven winner" hasn't led to great results. Kinda like the 5* vs. 3* argument, give me someone with a fire in their gut and something to prove over someone who thinks their sh*t don't stink anyday! And that being said, let's bring Connor McQueen back to CSTAT. He's a great student of the game, doing well on the coaching front, and seems humble enough to be willing to keep learning and adjusting, instead of locking into "the plan that shouldn't need adjustments."

This. If you aren't one of the BMAs paying Jimbos salary, it really doesn't matter what he is getting paid.

OP, great idea. But two things. Jimbo and the other overpaid coaches already have incentives built into their existing contracts. So you'd have to top that.

Second thing is that the base is too low. Maybe 4.5 to 5 mil would get someone decent. And the fan base is accustomed to (on average) 8-4 seasons, so why overpay.

But I think we should give up on trying to make the "home run" hire by outbidding. It clearly hasn't worked, and Jimbo's price per win has to be the highest of all P-5 coaches. (I admit I haven't done the research to prove that statement).

When PJ jumped to Minnesota what was his deal?

That was a couple of years ago, but that probably is the minimum you could get a guy for without offering the job to coordinator with no head coaching experience

I did my own research five years ago ph signed a five-year $18 million deal

So that was the market five years ago for a guy that recruited well at Western Michigan and won some games

I love the idea of incentive based contracts, as far as the potential to not waste money.

My problem with this whole line of thinking is that it is based on the assumption that if we offered a financial incentive to the HC, we would achieve those goals. I can promise you, no coach in the country is NOT trying to win games. Jimbo isn't just sitting back and cashing checks, but if he just tried he could win the SEC or NC, but he doesn't because he gets paid either way. He WOULD get paid handsomely if he achieved anything- extensions, raises, endorsements, building a brand that will guarantee him for life whatever he wants to do after coaching.

If these guys could win every game, then they absolutely would. Thinking that throwing money at it would motivate them to do it is just wrong. It would have worked by now if that was the case.

So- the only thing a heavily incentive based contract would do is save us tons of money when inevitably perform at the level we have for many decades. And all that is going to do is reinforce that level, by discouraging anyone who has any chance of changing our culture and product from ever being a part of this program.

Honestly we need a bma or collective of bma's to put out a $25 million bounty for a championship.
