The man most directly responsible... is Miles Bennett Dyson.

That's the group of people who needs to go first to change our culture.

The last good hire was Jackie Sherril and that was more than 40 years ago.

The Aggie love for Jackie is funny. He beat up on a weak conference and got the program under probation.

Probation was because Jackie beat tu.

Weak conference was during RC.

80s SWC was not weak.

How many SWC national titles in the 80s? Without looking it up I'm saying zero.
After fact check checking: 0 SWC titles in the 70s, 80s, or 90s.

So you're saying the conference is strong for a decade if a team from that conference wins national title. Wonderful logic. Man... Pac10 and Big8 I guess ruled the 60s and 70s..and ACC in the 2010s

Bingo!!! SMU and Arkansas were both good. Tu started to take a nose dive mainly because they couldn't hand out 120 scholarships like they did before. Jackie was a way better coach than Akers.

99.99% of this board was uncontrollably giddy with the Jimbo hire

Franchione was a solid hire on paper , could be argued was a slam dunk hire on paper
Sumlin was a solid hire on paper
Jimbo was a slam dunk on paper

Only hire imo that wasn't a splash was Mike Sherman

How do all our solid hires end up as failures?

Maybe time to demolish Kyle Field and build another elsewhere.

Go watch Jackie's first media conference. A&M hasn't had a coach since then with that kind of attitude. Sure he got paid a ton, but he backed it up. Bum Bright was a key figure in hiring him. They almost had Bo from Michigan hired. That was their first choice.

Except for Fran (at least at the time) I wouldn't call anyone since Jackie a solid hire.

How is hiring a coach with an 83-23 record, 3 ACC championships, 4 division titles and a National Championship not a solid hire at the time? He hasn't lived up to expectations here outside of 2020 but to say it wasn't a slam dunk on paper is ridiculous.
yeah that sounds great..but he sure looked pretty inept in 2017.

I guess you didn't see the back to back bowl games against Tim Brown led ND or the Bo Jackson led Auburn. Both games A&M took them apart. And the wrecking crew even stole Tim's towel!

John Sharp remains the main issue at Texas A&M. It isn't just football. We just had the university president resign after an embarrassing episode that should never have happened.

The point is outside of the Sherrill hire(which was cut short because the administration lost their nerve and instead of supporting Jackie FOR DOING THE SAME DAMN THING THE LONGHORNS WERE GETTING AWAY WITH, they let him go) we have been wandering in the wilderness.

We do not have championship winning guidance from the top and until that changes we are going no where. And unless Jimbo quits tripping over his own ego and gets out of the way we are about to wander deeper into the wilderness.

The problem is when we EXTEND contracts when it is not necessary, or even wise. If a coach wants to go to another team, SCREW him and let him go!!!

And my point is that every program we think are our peers celebrate and memorialize championships while we pin our fandom (in my lifetime) on injuring Ty Detmer's shoulder, stuffing Bo Jackson, stealing Tim Brown's towel...then a lot of mediocre stuff happened that people kind of gloss over...then "he got a touchdown" and Johnny Manziel's entire CV whether it was the Bama upset or grinding on a hot blonde while wearing a Scooby-Doo outfit.

Uh, we had a loss to tOSU in between those 2.
AND, it was the 12th Man Kickoff Team that stole the towel.

No love for RC?

I wonder if they melted down when we lost to LSU during those years.
Probably not. We were 6-1 against LSU during Slocum's tenure.

I had forgotten about the loss to tOSU. And it was the twelfth man that stole the towel. What was different about that era, under Sherrill we were always competitive. And then Sherril was gone because the leaders that will hang on to a loser much too long got rid of the best coach we have had since then. And they got rid of him over stupid crap!

Sherman was a good hire but we didn't have the patience for him completely fixing what Fran had done to the program. He needed a new S&C coach and a top flight DC.

Much like last year his record was bad but the cumulative loss points was small, wasn't getting blown out

They were SWC champs those years. That's why they were in the Cotton Bowl. That's how it used to work. So I'm sure there's banners and trophies for 3 consecutive SWC championships and the two Cotton Bowl victories.

Yes, an SEC championship would be great. Heck I'd be happy with an SEC West title at this point.

. You're right about the hire part. Certainly not the extensions for Sumlin and Fischer.

If beating t.u. is the standard then Fran deserves consideration for beating them twice in a row.
Jackie did some nice things but Aggie coaches now have a tougher task than the SWC days. SEC has no easy weeks.
