Some of the best talent A&M has ever seen on defense and yet Durkin is mucking it up!

Serves them right after they benefited from the fumble at the 1 that was ruled to have gone into the end zone and resulted in a touchback and ball to Clemson at Kyle in 2018. We would have won that game.

If the runner had run out of bounds and was also waylaid out of bounds wouldn't the offense have kept the ball?

Not if it's 4th and he's short. As soon as the ball carrier steps out or is down, the play is over, and if it's 4th down possession immediately changes. If a penalty happens after that instant, it's a dead ball foul applied to the next play. On downs 1-3 the offense would maintain possession and it would be yards given, but if it's 4th and they're short, it's applied to the offense taking the field and becomes yards taken. Makes sense when you think of it in sequence.
