That announcer said why targeting there is BS. "He should have lowered shoulder and go for first down".

He has his scheme based around those overhang safeties and he won't take them off the field so he won't ever take a DB off the field it's either 4-1-6 or 3-2-6 and when it looks like a 4-2-5 It's unsound because he is asking DBs to do d-line or LB things they don't rep in practice nor recruited for

Yes, if he ran out before the 1st down marker. That scenario happened to us a few years back.

Absolutely the correct call.

The announcers and Clemson fans can whine all they want, but they're wrong. The one announcer said it "rewarded the defense" how so?

If the qb had stayed up that extra half second to actually get a first down, then the LB hits him clean. No late hit.

Instead he chose to go down early on 4th down. Possession over. Unfortunately for the the LB he was unable to pull up once the QB made a bad decision and had a dead ball late hit.
Targeting and ejection is the correct call , but by giving Clemson a first down, Clemson QB is actually rewarded for a bad play and Duke LB would be double penalized
