It isn't clear it would have failed if they expanded. But likely Texas would have left with OU, USC, and UCLA…leaving a rather pleasant conference of UDub, WSU, Oregon, Oregon St, Stanford, Cal, Colorado, Arizona, ASU, Texas Tech, OkSt, and us.

Adding four more west of the Mississippi schools was possible still. And, by the way, the 12 team playoff likely will stabilize the top six conferences and sort them and their TV deals might very well be competitive again. But the left over debt from the Larry Scott era could be expensive to discharge given the failed national/regional Pac network carriage issues. It was a too clever by half design.

Why not? Pac12-x-y-z seems like a conference we could actually win now.

Let's do it! The Big12s shaping nicely also. Screw this SEC grind.

I'm much happier I'm the SEC but you are ignoring the obvious fact that if we had all bolted to the PAC, the conference would still be alive and well. Another thing to consider is we may have won natty in '12, if we had played in the PAC.

This is false. We were seriously considering the PAC from what I understand. The horn network not releasing their media rights is what killed the deal. Also it's what convinced us that staying in the B12 was a nonstarter since the horns would have more money and what was perceived at the time as a massive recruiting advantage with their own private network.

If the deal with the pac would have gone thru, the big 12 would have died, the entire landscape would have changed and what's happening today would be much different. Either way, what ended up playing out was much better.

From my recollection, we were considering going to the Pac with tu along with Colorado, Texas Tech, ou, and ok. state. Larry Scott paid a visit to Loftin along with SEC Commisioner Mike Slive. Loftin made notes in his book "100 Year Decision" (which is in the bookshelf in my office) which included notes about the pros and cons of going to the Pac, going to the SEC, and staying in the Big 12. However, Loftin was directed by our BOR to consider going to the SEC since there were the following issues:

1. Traveling to the west coast for road trips.
2. Loftin was turned off by tu's "we will take care of you" quote.
3. During Pac commissioner's Larry Scott's visit with Loftin, Loftin came to the realization that tu and Scott had planned out the move to the Pac conference behind everyone's back. Loftin knew tu couldn't be trusted.

Iirc
LHN was a result of the PAC deal falling through. The original PAC deal had tu, OU, Tceh, Okie Lite , CU and the Ags joining the PAC. The PAC would have held all the broadcast rights for its 16 members

tu holding on to some of their broadcast rights was why they agreed to stay in the Big12-2

The left 12 was always a great cultural fit for tu & a horrible fit for everybody else involved. We would have absolutely been the black sheep in the herd. You think we have problems with the media now- imagine what the left coast media would have done to us.

I'd rather be in the SEC

Also, f tu. They can't be trusted. And some of you are GLAD they are about to be in the SEC. UNBELIEVABLE.

Good summation ,
Does the 100 year decision discuss the timing of the SEC offer. Iirc the SEC offer came quickly but was not on the table when tu and the PAC came up with the PAC 16 expansion plan

You are assuming we would have been 13-0 and PAC champions. That may also have resulted in Alabama being 13-0 SEC champions. If so, there is NO WAY the BCS would have put us in ahead of Notre Dame and Alabama.

From what I read in the 100 Year Decision, after the offer to jump with tu to form the Pac 16, Lofton made contact with Slive and the SEC offer was quickly on the table in 2010 after Loftin discussed how a Pac 16 offer was on the table. However, Loftin declined both offers from the then Pac 10 and the SEC to remain in the Big 12 when Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe promised at least $20 million. However, Slive told Loftin that when he would still be awaiting a phone call from Loftin if Loftin reconsidered taking us to the SEC (which obviously happened a year later).

Feel kind of sorry for the last 4. By the way, 1 of the leftovers is currently ranked in the Top 20.

If those can't get into some conference they can't play games that provide any competition, power rating will plummet and consideration for the Polls/Playoff will drop.
What's left for them? The Mountain West?

So there are 18 in the New Big 10, 16 in the New Big 12 and 16 in the New SEC. Scheduling is going to be an issue. We dropped divisions and some Rival Games, because we didn't want to play 9 conference games.

If the Big10 & Big 12 expands conference games to get to some interplay champ level, that's 1 less opportunity for the last PAC12 schools to schedule someone.

Now the West Coast has 2 other real issues. (1) Their Time zone and (2) Apathy.
After a long day of watching SEC / ACC / Big12 / Big 10 games, that party is over.
And for a while, in the Pros too!, they haven't been able t0 fill the stadiums. Could be the change in the demographics on the Left Coast, could be the politics of who lives there...

The attack on masculinity that started decades ago may have reached a level that those on the West Coast simply aren't very interested in college football.
