1995 Nebraska

This is it for me

Closest game all year was a 35-21 win over Washington st

After that none else got closer than 23 points

And in the Big Eight that year, CU, KSU, and KU all finished in the Top Ten of the AP poll. And OU was ranked in the top ten at one point, before Schnellenberger's tenure blew up.

That Nebraska team absolutley skull-*****ed a great Florida team, too, in the national title game, 62-24, a Florida team that won the national title the next season. Tommie Frazier was the best running QB I've ever seen.

To be honest, 2005 USC is the best I've ever seen.

I still can't believe Texas won. 4 hour game, USC looked like the clear winner for 3.5 hours. 2005 USC beat 5 ranked teams, 2004 USC only beat 3.

this is what I came to bring up that squad would dominate 98% of historical seasons unscathed

Reggie Bush, Lendale White, Mike Williams, Dwayne Jarrett, Steve Smith, Matt Leinart backed up by 2 drafted QB's, 2 drafted TE's.
most fun offense to watch ever they dropped 50+ seven times that season
I prob coulda QB'd that team to 10 wins

i think miami 2001 is the most talented team

but to me i think the two best teams i have seen are LSU in 2019 and bama in 2020. that bama team was legit arguably better than LSU but that 2020 season kind of gets memory holed due to covid.

we were pretty damn good that year and they waxed us and then proceeded to wax everyone else too. won natty by close to 30 pts.
I think 01 Miami gets constantly overrated in historical discussions because of the future NFL success of their players. They were absolutely talented, but their 4th string RB turning into a quality NFL player has far less impact on the actual results on the field in 2001 as compared to their starting QB and Head Coach, which are massive outliers for 01 Miami compared to every other great team of all time.

People forget that they nearly lost 2 games that year despite playing a pretty mediocre schedule. They did play a few ranked teams, but nobody with fewer than 4 losses until the Rose Bowl. If we compare that to 2019 LSU or 2020 Bama who both dominated 3+ top 10 teams they really don't hold up.

Again, Kellen Winslow ended up becoming a great player and was drafted high in the NFL, but his 2 catches for 34 yards in the 2001 season don't make that team better. It's only in retrospect that the Hurricanes seem unbeatable. I'd still have them close to top 10, but not a runaway favorite like others.

How is the 1919 A&M team not at 100%? Unscored upon the entire season.
We did the exact same feat in 1917. I would argue the best 4 year run in all football.

1917 Texas Aggies 8-0 Total points for: 270 Total points against: 0.
* Included 98-0 win against the University of Dallas. Average margin of victory: 33.75.
1918 Texas Aggies 7-1 Total points for: 123 Total points against: 19
* Note, we "slumped" because Head Coach D.X. Bible was drafted into WW1. Only loss was 7-0 to t.u.
1919 Texas Aggies 10-0 Total points for: 275 Total points against: 0
* Bible returned.
1920 Texas Aggies, 6-1-1 Total points for: 228 Total points against: 7. (Tie was 0-0)
* Included 110-0 victory over Daniel Baker College (later absorbed into Howard Payne University). Only scored on one time all year in 7-3 loss to t.u.

Thus if you were an Aggie football player class of 1920 who started in 1916, your final record for four years would be 31-2, PF: 896-14. Think about it. That's only 2 opposing touchdowns in FOUR YEARS. I'm pretty sure that's as good as you can come to a dominating team at any level.

Easily '95 Huskers. They beat the snot out of everyone. Half their games they scored over 50 points, even against the best defenses in the league.

They are what the '85 Bears are to NFL

Sorry to break it to you, but the '85 Bears weren't the best all time. They feasted on a weak NFL that year, which is one reason why they only won like 1 playoff game in surrounding years.

'95 Nebraska was very good, but don't let their offensive numbers blind you. They scored 50+ in 4 games against mostly mediocre teams. The only 11+ win team they beat was Florida in the NC game. Their defense gave up 14.5 points per game. Good, but they only played 6 teams with winning records, and 2 of those teams only won 6 games. Colorado, KState, and KU racked up 10 wins each, but none of those wins (outside of against each other) were against anyone good. None of their opponents had 10 wins, and only a couple had 8 or more. That's among all three. Bottom line: Nebraska's schedule that year wasn't that great.

Not only was the 2001 Miami team better, but the 1971 Nebraska team was MUCH better. That team, in an era where offensive output topped out at about 35 points a game, scored an average of 39 against giving up 8. They only had one close game -- a 4 point win against an 11-1 OU team. They beat another 11-1 Bama team by 4 and a half touchdowns in the Orange Bowl. They beat 5 teams with 8 or more wins that year in an era where 11 games was the norm, and outscored their opponents 37-10 in those games. That included the 35-31 OU win, so other than OU, the score differential was much more. Unlike the '95 team, the '71 team did not beat a 3-8 team by only 2 TDs while scoring almost 20 points under their PPG average.

True about the 71 Nebraska team. I believe the Big 8 had the 1,2 & 3 ranked teams at one point in the season. They may have finished 1,2 & 3 (Nebraska, OU, CU).

In 2019 LSU beat:

ACC Champions
SEC East Champions
Big 12 Champions
Fiesta Bowl Champions
Sugar Bowl Champions
Orange Bowl Champions
Citrus Bowl Champions
Texas Bowl Champions

they beat 7 teams that were top 10 ranked at the time they played them (2001 Miami only played 1)
they beat 5 of the top 7 of the final rankings (2001 Miami didn't play a SINGLE team that finished in the top 7)
they beat 4 of the preseason top 5

Teams only played 11 games plus a bowl in 1995. Dinging Nebraska or their opponents for not enough wins against 10 or 11 win teams is ignorant of how football was then

Even with only 11 game schedules Nebraska beat 3 other ten win teams just in the Big 8 which had 4 of the top ten that year. Oklahoma was the 5th best team in the Big 8 but had a bad record because half their league was top ten. They did beat a ten win in Texas though. A&M ran into the Big 8 buzz saw as well as this was the season we were #3 and lost in Boulder to CU.

In 2019 LSU faced some 1st round DBs and not 1 of them could cover all those WRs. It got so bad teams were dropping 7 and 8 and it did not matter. Joe Burrow's legs combined with accuracy and the defense did not matter.

That was the second game. Think about this. Ga, Bama. Fla, Clemson, and OK were 60-4 VS everyone not named LSU and LSU beat all of them by an avg of 20.

Nebraska would never keep up with that 2019 LSU team. Joe Burrow Chase and Jefferson are unbelievable in the NFL. They were just a mismatch for any college team.
