'It's time': Conner Weigman details team's progress heading into summer

With his first season in the rearview, A&M QB Conner Weigman is continuing to evolve as a player and leader as fall slowly approaches. Courtesy of the Pintail Hunting Club, Weigman caught up with Billy Liucci and shared his thoughts on Aggie baseball, the offseason and much more.

Key notes from Conner Weigman interview

• It was more baseball season this time of year, but when I was a junior in high school, I went to Texas A&M’s high school camp. That was really good.
   
• I was following Aggie baseball’s run in Hoover. I think they’re good. They can hit the ball. If you can hit the ball, you just have to score more runs than the other team.
   
• You have to pound the strike zone and get ahead in the count. If you’re throwing strikes with multiple different pitchers, it’ll keep the hitters off balance. It’s hard to hit a 95 mph fastball, and if you’re throwing that consistently for strikes with off-speed stuff, you’re going to have a good day as a pitcher.
   
• I always thought it was more fun to get a pitcher late. It’s like a puzzle. You’re making adjustments off of what you’re doing when you’re swinging, and you’re making adjustments pitch by pitch on what they’re throwing. It’s a constant battle. I think it’s really fun when a pitcher is dealing, and you’re having to figure it out.
   
• We had a really good week of preparation before LSU. I feel like that’s one of the biggest parts of the game is watching film, and I feel like I did a really good job of that during that week. Being able to grow on that side of things — the off-the-field side of football. It’s a little easier when you know what the defense is doing.
   
• I’m head and shoulders above where I was. It’s crazy to think about how much I've grown since I’ve been here, and it’s about to get real scary for some defenses.
   
• All of us, our whole class, it was our first rodeo last year. Now we know what to expect. We know what it’s going to take to get where we want to go, and we’re strictly business right now. We’re working hard.
   
• I talk to the receivers yesterday, and I let them know that we could have the best receiving corps in the country. Our job is to get them the ball as fast as possible to let them go to work. They make plays. We’re just trying to give them the ball.
   
• The chemistry that we built after the season last year is impressive. Going through the spring, we did a lot of team stuff, having people over at the house and getting to know people a lot more than what we were doing beforehand. It has been really good to see the camaraderie of the team come together, and it’s showing up on the field during the spring and in practices.
   
• It’s noted, and it’s in the camera roll that I’m not mentioned among the SEC’s best quarterbacks. It is what it is. I can’t control it except to put in work and prove everybody wrong. I’m just controlling what I can control. Whatever else happens, it is what it is.
   
• We’ve got dudes at receiver.
   
• Evan Stewart is a smart guy. He knows what’s going on. He knows the coverages. He knows where to sit and when not to sit. For us, we probably weren’t on the same page as much as we needed to be last year. To be able to have open communication with him and all the receivers has been huge and really helpful. Everyone understands what needs to get done to have a successful year.
   
• Noah Thomas is a dude. He brings everything to the table. Speed. He catches everything in his vicinity. He can go up and get it. He can run good routes. He can line up inside and outside. Whatever you ask of him, he can do it.
   
• I believe in my guys. I think my guys are better than their guys. I’ll take my guys every day.
   
• The whole team, in general, the vibes felt way different this spring. It felt like everyone has a purpose, and everyone knows what’s expected. We’re working hard, and it has been cool to see.
   
• Jimbo Fisher laid off and let Bobby Petrino run things on the offensive side. It was good. Jimbo is always there and giving you pointers on where your eyes need to be or proper footwork. It’s a good mixture between both of them, and I enjoyed the whole spring.
   
• Bryce Anderson is ready to break out, but that’s an easy one. I knew what I expected of him when he came here. Now that he’s actually getting that time on the field, he has been putting in work. He knows what’s going on. He played quarterback in high school. He’s a really smart guy, and he helps me. He tells me what he sees, and if I’m being bad with my eyes, he’ll give me feedback. It has been good to work off each other. We were roommates during our freshman year, and we would talk ball all the time.
   
• Theo Melin Öhrström is swole. That’s a big boy. That’s a big Sweden boy. Jake Johnson catches everything in his vicinity too. We were out throwing the other day, and he looked like Rob Gronkowski. He had a one-handed catch. The tight ends are coming along. They’re getting faster and stronger, and they’re going to be really good.
   
• Having two tight ends that can run routes and catch the ball, it keeps the defense guessing. We can run the ball and pass the ball and be good at both with what we’ve got on the field. It’s a huge advantage.
   
• I traveled a little bit during the break, but for the most part, I was working out. I went on vacation with some family friends, but other than that, we’ve been working. I’m ready for the season and ready to prove what I can do. I don’t want to say too much, but it’s time.
