I don't see how eliminating a large chunk of your viewership is going to make the networks more money overall. Texas Tech fans aren't going to start rooting for A&M or the sips and tuning into all of their games. They'll just stop watching college football.
Will more casual fans watch big games? Maybe. But I don't see how that'll make up for all the viewers you lose. God forbid someone attend and be passionate about a school outside of the top 40.
You're telling me Texas Tech moves the needle enough the networks to worry about losing them?
They already don't mind. Same goes to for most of the PAC-12, that's why they don't even have a new TV deal yet.
We can't go around talking about how Tech and Baylor are irrelevant and then say it's going to matter to the bottom line if they go away all of a sudden.
Individually, these schools don't move the needle. But if the fans of 70 schools stop watching college football because their team didn't make it into the two super conferences? That's a big deal.
This
70 fanbases disengaging from major college football is a huge deal
To me, the beauty of college football is all the schools with a chance to have their moment by beating a big dog or having a random magical season
That pretty much all goes away with this new model of 40-50 super schools
Takes away from the game bigtime if you ask me
I hope it doesn't come to pass, but I feel in order to get a handle on nil/free transfers etc it may be the only way
The problem with your premise is that you are saying that 70 teams would "disengage from college football" which is completely false. Would you say that current non P5 teams are disengaged? No. Can they compete with the SEC and B10 financially? Also no. And they haven't competed since long before NIL.
Yeah, but under this future model the 40-50 schools would only play each other, thus rendering the other 70 or so to a "lower" division
At least now, tge other 70 or do are still in the same division and have a chance for a magical season or a monumental upset
There's no more monumental upsets or magical season for those teams when they are not playing to top 40-50 schools anymore
Interest will wane in those programs fanbases and those fanbases may stop watching the highest division of football because it no longer affects them
Right now all 120 o do are theoretically under the same umbrella
Cincy gad their magical season at the highest level and made the playoffs and so did tcu
That's gone when they are relegated to a lower brand of ball
