If true, college football should just be put to down...

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaafb/report-qb-jaden-rashada-had-13-million-nil-deal-from-florida-fall-apart/ar-AA16ja2i?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=7a9a8cc740304e97ab608b3bf99d42e4

Wonder if DJ Lagway got part of his money guaranteed for 2024 class and that's the issue.

Josh Pate stated on his show that Florida screwed up the deal and he didn't blame the player.

$13mil for a QB out of high school is idiotic. NIL has gotten out of control. There has to be some new rules that for a 5* player every school has a limit on how much they can offer something like the NFL.

So does this mean Rashada hits the portal so someone else can fork over the $13 million asking price?

Somehow the media and Saban are going to try to tie this to A&M.

I wonder how much NIL will affect declaring for NFL early. Not so much the top picks, but those that are 3rd round and later.

There is no such thing as NIL. How many players are actually getting paid for their name, image, or likeness versus just being bought?

I agree it's a ridiculous sum of money.

But why shouldn't the kid be able to earn whatever he can and whatever the market can bear? There are many people in this country earning ridiculous sums of money for what they do, in my opinion. But- that's part of capitalism.

The problem here (and all over) is the market clearly didn't actually bear it. He was lied to. This isn't like an nfl contract, there are plenty of kids pissed about not getting what was promised.

Like a "pinky-promise?!"

Never bet on a promise. Get it in writing.

Chase Lane indicated in a podcast for TexAgs that many of these NIL deals have fine-print and don't realize they got screwed.

If someone presents you with a $13M "deal" or "promise" you better have an advocate or someone who knows how a $13M deal gets paid.

And a promise of "oh we'll change that, just sign it" is on the signer.

I'm thinking if every school had to offer the same price for the players by the way they are starred kind of like the NFL with with first round to 7 round guys then the kid would have to really pick a school he wanted to go to and not because of money. Right now it's just out of control. Giving a kid that much money out of high school is just crazy. What stops them from flaming out. The kid is set for live.

Fair point. These are also powerful lessons about how a free market works. You have to be prudent informed, and when necessary get professional advice/representation, when dealing with contracts. We all do it, all throughout our lives.

The sharks circled early because there were a bunch of kids with their eyes wide and hungry for NIL. Most deals have likely gone down without much fuss. A few high profile deals have gone sour (for varying reasons). As a few of them get burned, people will wise up and start getting better representation. Those scummy opportunities will dry up, as people sniff them out.

Then the pendulum will swing the other way (and likely has begun to), where there will be shady representatives. Again, over time, those will get sniffed out.

Both will always be there to some extent, just as they are in every single industry. But the market will settle into a groove as time goes on.

Florida is nuts to offer one player $13 MM

however after just a year and a half of NIL...these collectives and boosters have started putting cancellation clauses, opt out clauses, and so forth in the contracts.

basically limiting the guaranteed money in case the player transfers or turns out not to be good

This

Time for college football players to be on contract thrn earn whatever they can in endorsement desks, like nfl players do

The only other solution is to come up with a governing body that has the strength, resources and brains to enforce the rules on Pay for play and tampering , because the ncaa clearly doesn't

I guess I'm questioning whether it is our job (as a society) to stop someone from flaming out. Some teens have been given way too much money for a long time- whether it is actors, music artists, athletes, or entrepreneurs... Whether they flame out or capitalize on being set for life, is on them. No one is crying over rappers or child actors who squander millions of dollars and ruin their lives before they are 21, and that has been happening for a long time. Why are we now suddenly outraged that it is happening to athletes?

And if you think that all the schools would play by the rules, and offer the same amount of money... I'm sorry but that isn't a reality for 2 reasons -

#1 - It isn't the schools technically offering the money. They can't because it isn't pay-for-play. These are NIL endorsement deals with 3rd parties. So... no way to regulate that through a cap, because this is a free market and we opened the door to student-athletes being able to pursue and trade in that free market (trading their NIL for $).

#2 - All schools essentially had that same restriction before NIL - they could offer 0$. Everyone was supposed to be the same and on equal footing. We all know that isn't true, and tons of cash flowed in all sorts of "creative" ways. Not much has changed now, and that is still happening. Because billions of dollars are on the line, people will always find a way to push the lines, gain an advantage, or flat out cheat.

Well...no, and apparently the "market" can't bear 13MM. I suspect the stupidity in this market will crash the whole idea across the board.

Maybe someone can tell me what differentiates nfl from college now? Is it the affiliation with a school? Maybe you buy into the myth of the college football student athlete, but I know for the vast majority of them, they aren't getting an education.

It's terrible what they allowed to happen.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned. If this was an agreement signed in Nov/Dec, before he was enrolled as a student at UF, isn't that against NCAA rules? I thought an athlete couldn't sign an NIL deal until they officially became a student.
TheCurl84

Also, those calling for a cap, like the NFL has, need to remember these are arrangements between external entities and the player. The school is not involved. No way can the NCAA impose a cap.
