After #1, Rankings are Weird

So before the conference championship game, TCU was 12-0 and ranked #3.

So then they go 1-2
  • Lose a close game to K State
  • Win a close game against Michigan
  • Get blown out by Georgia

End the year ranked #2 which is higher than where they started after going 1-2.

Has any other team ever lost 2 of their last 3 games at the end of the season with one of them being a blowout loss and actually moved up in the rankings like TCU did???

Has to be the 1st time this has ever happened, right?

All I know is tcu isn't the 2nd best team in the nation. TCU played their very best game of the year against Michigan and Michigan played possibly their worst game.

Not trying to bash TCU and understand they beat #2 but so weird to lose 2 of 3 at the end of season and garner a higher ranking.

It's not that weird, the loser of the championship game finishes 2nd in the rankings in all sports

TCU would not finish 2nd in the SEC or 3rd.

Not to mention they had to come from behind to win 4 games in the bdf. They have been living on the edge all year and it caught up to them last night in a big way.

Is it predetermined that 1 and 2 are whoever played in finals, regardless of outcome?

Pretty much yes

Yes, in the simpleton minds of AP voters.

And after you get past #1, who gives a damn.

Plus it's the AP poll, it's completely meaningless. The playoff poll is the only thing that matters now and this is why they don't update their rankings after the playoffs.

Is that your final answer?

I hate to break it to you but the loser of the NCAA basketball tourney does not automatically finish ranked #2. In fact the same does not hold true for college baseball either.

I'll give y'all a little peek behind the curtain…..

The AP voters voted WAYYYY before the championship game, and the only thing that was going to change was who was 1 and who was 2.

Kind of like the NCAA tournament selection that allegedly takes place AFTER conference tourneys

Wouldn't finish 4th, either and maybe not even 5th. Georgia, Bama, UT and LSU all would roll TCU and its a toss-up on about 4 other schools.

TCU can pound their frog chest all they want. The football community know they're not the #2 team.

They'd be at best middle of the pack in the SEC.

Frauds that got lucky to slide into the Natty game.

The way they embarrassed the nation of Texas they should be #102.

The only legit way they're #2 is if you're talking about going to the restroom.

I understand it now.

You are saying the voters subconsciously picked them #2 because they played like #2 last night.

Actually, I think there are a bunch of examples across basketball and baseball. But it doesn't matter.

Question because I am not able to verify that it is fact.

Just seems so weird to go 1-2 with one of those losses being a blow out and actually move up in the rankings.

More poll votes to be 13-2 versus 12-0. Weird wild stuff.

AP voters do not have to vote loser to #2, nor even vote the winner to #1.

I think there was that year when UCF went undefeated and some AP voter put them #1.

It's so meaningless that people on here have been complaining about it since it was released today.

In the old days when everyone played in bowl games and the sp and coaches polls were the only ranking systems, tcu would have dropped after losing to kst and if their bowl game was Georgia they would have plummeted

If it was Michigan they would have rise up but probably still not number 2

With the playoffs, the title game loser is always put at number 2 now

With tu and OU leaving, this puts TCU in the drivers seat to win the BDF for a long time.

You could not be more wrong. The College Football Playoff Rankings is not updated after the Playoff Selections because it is no longer needed. After the playoff teams are selected, the College Football Playoff Rankings is what becomes completely meaningless. The sole reason for that poll is to pick the 4 playoff teams. The playoffs themselves determine who is National Champion.

The AP Poll is the best and definitive "poll" after the season and playoffs are over. Technically, the AP Poll is not obligated to make the College Football Playoff winner the #1 team, but I can't imagine that ever not happening. The winner of the playoffs is the National Champion. If the AP poll ever didn't make the winner the #1 team, I guess we would have a split national championship, but again, that isn't going to happen.

I was surprised to see TCU as #2 in the final poll. I thought they would be #3 and Ohio State would get #2 based on how Ohio State played against Georgia. However, it isn't completely unimaginable that a team would lose games and move up in the rankings because other teams ranked highly also lost games.

And it should be.

If you win a game and are the champ, the loser is automatically No. 2

1-2 depends on the NCG. 3-4 can be debated betwen the losers of the semi finals. After that, meh - politics and favoritism like always.

It feels like old school AP would have put TCU #5 or #6. Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan, Penn State, or something like that.
