3 or 4 of the names being floated for OC had less than 10yrs coaching experience. Any or all of them might have been a good fit for A&M but maybe not.
Petrino has 30+ years of experience coaching and calling plays for teams. Petrino most likely negotiated full control of the offense. He'll obviously run his offense by J F but once design is set, I think Petrino will make personnel, playbook decisions. He will also probably have the ability to suggest coaching changes / upgrades to the existing staff. His experience alone allows him to match personnel to an offense that should be effective. J Fisher is still head coach and the buck stops with him. Jimbo should just do his job as head coach.
While the young OC's are building a superb pedigree, they lack the ability to go toe to toe with Jimbo. They also lack the experience working with the landscape of offenses Petrino has seen. If Jimbo hired a young guy and things were rocky for the first 5 games, Jimbo might want to step in or take over. Petrino will probably quit if he thinks Jimbo isn't sticking to whatever control J F agreed to when he hired him.
Fans need to stop trying to marry morals and coaching. The hire was based on Petrino's coaching acumen only. It's up to Jimbo to make sure the ethics, morals, etc are lived up to. If Petrino fails on that front, he'll be dismissed.
I think Petrino's lack of good judgement in years past was worthy of getting fired. He got fired.
I think Petrino's experience and reputation as an offensive coordinator will pay dividends for our team.
I also believe his social behavior will be constantly judged by A&M brass and the media. I expect the brass to do their jobs and flush him if he or any of the other coaches act in any way that is detrimental to the University.
For the record, if I were asked to describe his past behavior, disgusting comes to mind. Hoping he'll do his job and hoping his past transgressions are all in the past.
