One of the critiques against Jimbo was that whoever he hires as OC will be a lesser coach or "yes man" and that Jimbo would effectively re-absorb the play calling from the 'yes man'. I think Petrino mitigates that concern because he's a mature coach and will demand a certain about of deference from Jimbo.
I think Petrino will be a short-term hire for us. I think he will be successful. If he's successful, he will end up as a HC somewhere else in short order. Sadly, successful programs have this problem.
Agree that Petrino will NOT be a yes man. The concerns over Jimbo just still owning the offense are likely resolved by hiring Petrino. However, he is an a-hole. Jimbo is stubborn and I expect will have a very difficult time staying completely out of the offense unless everything is going perfect. I expect Jimbo and Petrino to butt heads and it could lead to a toxic environment.
Between the character issues (which includes the lying and attempted cover-up in addition to just having an affair) and the potential issues between Jimbo and Petrino, I don't understand this hire. He hasn't had the level of success to justify the risk or the poor optics. I'm amazed Jimbo wanted him. Hopefully this hire wasn't pushed on him by others. It isn't like Petrino was in high demand. I would rather have had a young up-and-coming OC (w/ the hope Jimbo stayed out of his way).
Before this was announced and when the interviewing of Petrino became known, it seemed like most were against this hire. Interesting to see if people's minds change now that he has actually been given the job. I don't like the hire. However, I do think there is a chance the offense looks significantly better. Jimbo certainly wasn't cutting it. That said, I expect this doesn't end well due to the personalities involved.
