Because there weren't enough 6-6 or better teams to fill all the slots. The 5-7 teams are chosen based on APR (academic progress rate).

Just remember, watching 5-7 Rice play in the Lending Tree Bowl is what opponents of CFP expansion say the 12 team model is going to ruin.

We weren't going to go anyway.

No way Jimbo goes to a bowl and risks losing, as he would lose all the goodwill and momentum of the LSU win.
As it stands now, he can claim for the next nine months that the program has righted itself, and we are on finally on our way.

More entertaining than most of the playoff games. Bowl games are usually competitive, although todays games haven't been that close

Bowl Season is a glorious orgy of college football at the end of the year. Love it.

Keep the faith. We'll go next year when we're 6-6

Oooooohhhhhhh.....so it's the same reason every time somebody new asks the same question.

Who really cares? Be glad the players and a handful of fans got to enjoy a trip to Mobile.

Because it's the right answer whether the question is asked once or a hundred times.

They'll keep playing all of these bowl games as long as ESPN keeps paying for them.

If you like watching ANY bowl that Rice would play in, regardless of their record, I'm not sure there's hope for you.

And ESPN will keep paying for them as long as they do better ratings than another talking head show.

Because there are way too many bowl games. Bowls should require at least 9 wins and once all the teams with 9 or more wins are selected, cancel the rest.

Half of these bowls, ESPN flat out owns. It's free money to show these garbage matchups.

So that would mean no Gene Stallings led upset over Bear Bryant and Alabama in the Cotton Bowl, no smashing of the BYU team w/Heisman winner Ty Detmer in the Holiday Bowl, and no Johnny Manziel 21 point second half comeback over Duke in the Peach Bowl.
