Exactly. The target audience for the app is always going to be for people that pay money for this site. They are the ones that have the most need to see the little numbers piling up for their notifications of new posts/responses/dms. For the rest of us, responsive design is just fine.

I never pay and I'm always on dark mode. And get all the inside info I crave.

Tried to open the zoo and it said I had to have a basic subscription?!?! What? It works just fine online with my login.

You can fix the issue by ditching Apple.
