Good, bad hire as OC? He sure does have a lot of positive things to say about Jimbo and if you google Mullen and Fisher they seem to have a lot of respect for each other. Rehab job at A&M, fix the offense and then move back into a HC gig?

I don't know enough about Mullen to comment one way or the other except to say he seemed to always have good offenses.

Thoughts?

He would automatically become the best gameday X's and O's guy, but not sure he recruits well enough to meet Jimbo's standard.

Jimbo can pick up the slack there as he excels in offensive recruiting

He's a good coach but IDK how much he wants to be a CFB coach. Apparently he hates recruiting.

Would be a great OC. Pass on him as HC

The NIL deal will handle the recruiting.

I think he'd be a really good hire. He develops qbs, schemes to the talent he has and has done more with less. Not sure if he's interested in being an OC.

Dan Mullen would be a great hire as an offensive coordinator. He even came to the defense of Jimbo Fisher. Mullen pointed out that Fisher has had 6 seasons of at least 10 wins, along with a 9-1 mark 2 years ago.

"The one thing everyone ought to remember, if you sign the No. 1 recruiting class doesn't mean you're going to be a great team," Mullen said. "It means you have really good young talent that needs to be developed over the next couple of years and we've got to wait for those guys to go play."

Mullen then said to set aside Fisher's contract, which was a win for agent Jimmy Sexton, and the end of the Florida State tenure was not good.

"He's won, and he's won consistently, has a pretty good career record," Mullen said. "Now the problem is he's being judged on show up to Texas A&M, beat Alabama, become Alabama and win national championships and that hasn't happened yet."

Yea, I saw that and also this, FSU's Jimbo Fisher complimentary of UF Dan Mullen
Quote:

"I think Dan is an outstanding coach. I've known Dan, talked to Dan off and on. We play common opponents. We shared information. I guess those days are over," Fisher said with a laugh during his Monday press conference from 2017.
Sounds like they know each other pretty well.

IIRC, Jimbo has expressly stated that they are good friends in response to a question about playing FL while Mullen was on the hot seat or maybe it was more/just about Mullen being on the hot seat.

I'll admit, it's really weird seeing Mullen be this respectful.

Mullen would be a home run hire as OC. Let Jimbo and the NIL take care of recruiting and let Mullen take care of the offense. It would be a great fit.

I read an article this morning with Mullen defending Jimbo.

Seems like it could work.

This is one move I'd like to see, but there would have to be some stipulations:
1) Jimbo hands him the keys to the offense completely...not an "advisory" OC like now, and no back-seat driving.
2) Leave the recruiting to Jimbo. Let Mullen have his input into who to go after, but let Jimbo do the heavy lifting.
3) As bad as I think Jimbo is in front of the microphone, keep Mullen away from the microphone completely.

I think it could happen. Mullen has been a guest on Full Ride (Sirius XM) this year pretty frequently, and a couple of weeks ago Rick & Chris were talking about how Fisher needs to hand over the offense to a coordinator while Mullen was on the call with them & Mullen was silent the entire time they talked A&M, then joined the conversation again once A&M was out of the way. So I think there could be something there.

Now, who to get for OL and DC? Cause the dogs we have right now won't hunt.

The OC should bring in the OL coach the position coaches can stay as they have been able to bring in talent. The DC can stay... if you look at the way defense is being played in the NFL no one cares about rushing yards but the scoring defense is really all that matters.

Another reason this would be a great hire is he could start work the day after we play LSU.

Dan Mullen is a guy who has to have an option offense with the QB carrying a heavy load. While Jimbo has moved more more into this area I do not see the fit. And frankly I'm not a fan of the QB being the running back.

This is my #1 choice as well. We need to stop worrying about hiring "recruiters". We keep doing that and they aren't good at "coaching". You know what will cure our recruiting woes? Winning. Having great coaches who can actually scheme and adjust in-game will lead to us winning ball games. We had that in Elko and it was amazing. We have not yet had that on the offensive side of the ball.

Coaches hire other coaches they know and like and believe that would mesh well with their team and other assistants. Jimbo isn't going to hire someone like Garrett Riley unless they have some sort of existing relationship we don't know of. If Jimbo knows, likes and respects Mullen - I think its a possibility. Plus it gives Mullen a foot back in the door to coaching which I think he wants.

As far as scheme goes and thinking of the Dak Prescott years - I don't remember specifics but yes there were some QB runs in there but I do remember Dak also throwing the ball all over the place while he was there. QB runs are in our arsenal as well but when you've got limited backups available you adjust.

Jimbo mentions from time to time in his pressers talking to other coaches and bouncing off ideas. I'll bet Mullen is one of those phone calls for Jimbo.

Some of Dak's MSU #'s in his senior season - "One of just two players nationally in the last seven seasons to average over 265 yards passing and 75 yards rushing per game in a season (Manziel, 2012) … Threw for over 250 yards a school record 18 times and owns a school record nine 300-yard passing games ... Threw for over 200 yards and rushed for 100 yards in the same game six times …"

I doubt that would be an issue, when do we ever hear the coordinators talk to the media at A&M under Fisher? isn't it once before the season starts and once prior to a bowl game? I can't remember any other times our coaches speak to the media besides Jimbo.

Why? He's been a successful OC everywhere he's been and a lot of that in the SEC. Look at his bio below. He got fired at Florida for having a crap defense.
Quote:

After serving as a graduate assistant at Syracuse and Notre Dame, Mullen was hired by Urban Meyer to coach QBs at Bowling Green from 2001 to 2002. Mullen would stay in the same position with Meyer after the latter was hired by Utah where they both stayed for the 2003 and 2004 seasons. During his tenure at Utah, he also recruited and briefly coached Brian Johnson, a quarterback who led Utah to 130 and a Sugar Bowl victory for the 2008-2009 season.[7]
Following an undefeated 2004 season which led to Utes QB Alex Smith being the first overall pick in the draft Meyer was hired by the University of Florida. Mullen served as interim offensive coordinator[8] for the 2005 Fiesta Bowl and led the team to a 357 win over the Pittsburgh Panthers. After the victory Mullen would join Meyer's staff at Florida as offensive coordinator and QB coach.
As a coach, Mullen has coached several notable players, including quarterbacks Alex Smith (Utah), Heisman Trophy-winner Tim Tebow (Florida), Dak Prescott (Mississippi State), and Kyle Trask (Florida).

In 2014, Mullen led the Bulldogs to one of the greatest seasons in school history. He claimed his first Top 10 win at Mississippi State, as the Bulldogs knocked off #8 LSU, 3429, at Death Valley, allowing them to enter the polls at #12. He followed that up by beating #6 Texas A&M, 4831, in Starkville, vaulting them to third in the nation. A week later, they beat #2 Auburn, 3823, which propelled them to the top spot in both major polls (as well as the inaugural College Football Playoff Top 25) the highest ranking in Mississippi State's history, and the highest that any FBS team in Mississippi had been ranked at that late date in almost half a century. Losses to Alabama and Mississippi ended any hope of a national championship. The Bulldogs finished 102 only the third 10-win season in school [18] history. This netted them an appearance in the Orange Bowl, where they lost to Georgia Tech, 4934, the third major bowl appearance in school history, after the 1937 Orange Bowl and the 1941 Orange Bowl.

Mullen's first Gator squad went 103 and finished ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll after a 4115 victory over then-No. 8 Michigan in the Peach Bowl. He led the Gators to an 112 record the following year including a 3628 win over Virginia in the Orange Bowl. In his third season at Florida, Mullen's Gators began the season 8-1 and were ranked as high as #4 as quarterback Kyle Trask put up record-breaking numbers, including a nation-high 4,125 passing yards and 43 passing touchdowns, the latter of which set a school single-season record. However, they lost their last three games while giving up 144 points, including a 55-20 loss to Oklahoma in Florida's first ever trip to the Cotton Bowl Classic. Though the offense performed well, Mullen drew increasing criticism for his seeming disinterest in the bowl game, his struggle to recruit elite players to Florida, and the Gators' pourous defense, which gave up more points per game than any Florida squad in over a century.[24]
