I can't help but notice we have hardly any players signed, and only 5-6 ESPN 300s. I haven't kept up. How screwed are we at this point?

Not very. It's going slow but the class should still close around 20. It might be a bit lackluster, though, but it's not like A&M is going to sign only 8 players and not get any 4 or 5 star players. Losing Hill hurts but there's a chance he just wanted to shop around a bit more, and that's the keynote player Jimbo really needs to land to salvage the class as a decent one.

The answer is that with a 30 count incoming for 2022 generally the expectation is Jimbo is focusing on filling in depth and picking up critical talent. Generally that includes one QB per class. WRs, RBs, DBs, and LBs tend to be focused on, too regularly if not annually. Extending line depth is always necessary. But imagine that the total scholarships were the opposite of the 30 last year and came in at 20. If eight of 30 were considered 5* by some service (which I believe was the case) then that's around 25% so we might expect 3-5.

I don't believe anyone here is reliably clairvoyant so claiming to know exactly how it turns out is wishful. I think Jimbo has to overcome both a lot of negative press and noisy fan dissatisfaction so I would realistically moderate expectations for now. But anything can happen!

Is it really negative press and noisy fans? Do recruits not own TVs? Anything negativity Jimbo gets is his fault and well deserved. Guy is paid a small fortune to make A&M a champion. 3-7 ain't it

Honestly, focus on the transfer portal. Jimbo can find guys who are ready to play immediately

I would be ecstatic if we ranked 10 to 15 this year.

Hill and Hicks are probably gone and Bisontis is looking around.
I don't know about the rest .
The biggest concern we should all have is Weigman.
Dumbo needs to hire an OC ASAP after season is over .

Well apparently you don't need 4*'s and 5*'s to compete in the SEC. App State and Liberty say hi!!

Our only saving grace = $$$$$$$$$

Be prepared for unacceptable, the ranking systems iirc include class size , larger classes are generally ranked higher. Also portal recruits are generally 3* guys that got better and want to play top tier P5 football. A few portal guys ( which we desperately need ) will lower our ranking score

We will be fine. LSU had a massive number of transfers and a small class last year and they cleaned up in the portal and won the SEC west. We have a coaching problem not a talent problem.

Need to account for players transferring out too - who knows how many have a foot out the door already. Hopefully Jimbo uses the portal to find some experienced players that have excelled at lesser programs to fill in the gaps where we need more experience and maturity - ie the OL and LB. Maybe a big RB as well.

Need Hill back, but even with or without him we need to sign more LBs. Recruiting has been good to very good to excellent every year under Jimbo, and I believe this will also be a solid class, but we need more LBs and better LBs. We need better LB play on defense.

Cooper is great, but Bama, lsu, UGA, even State, all have multiple LBs as good as Cooper. LBs are like RBs, there are a few elite players, but there is an abundance of good players that you can get and coach up.

Perkins was a huge miss last cycle, Hill would be a huge miss this cycle, that would be fine if we had signed enough 2nd choice LBs that are going to Pig, Okie State, etc., etc.

While the record is bad, I think the national pundits consistently bashing Jimbo has an effect on recruiting more than the losing.

I guess it is predictable that when you have an offensive line that can't sustain a block long enough to support a vertical route, you are going to throw underneath and run. Aside from that, please explain how the system is flawed? It is used all across the country at many levels and with a ton of success.

We pay well.

I don't think Jimbo believes in using the portal at all. It's not as if he struck out on all his transfer target. He's not using it except to help what he really wants to do: high school recruiting.

We are playing by 2017 rules. When guys transfer out we replace them with 17 year olds. I've accepted that we'll be good once every 3 or 4 years. That year is 2024-25 for us.

Next year is another 8-5 type throwaway season that some on here will tell you is "great progress". But maybe they're right in that if the 12 teamer is around in 2024-25, we should make it.

Won't know until Spring. This class was always going to be small. We'll see how the portal shakes out.

It is also not the offense Jimbo ran the first 3 years which were his best years. If we are going to run this offense there has to be more to the WRs than lining up 2x2 and each just running a route. There are no combo routes, no rub routes, no crossing routes, no play designs to get the WR or RB open in space using the WRs to clear out / run interference, etc.

it is predictable and easily defended, which is why we struggled to move the ball and score vs. USC, got shut out vs. FL in 2H, barely scored at all vs. a terrible Auburn team, went 2+ quarters of barely moving the ball vs. Ole Miss, zero offense at all vs. State in 1H, etc., etc., etc.

Edited to reflect our current situation. LSU did that after a coaching change, which we won't be able to afford for a while.

I have little to no faith that jimbo will use the portal effectively.

if we lose current contributors on the roster I fully expect us to be young again next year and thin at certain spots and there being a million excuses as to why we aren't competing again.

It's a pretty nice sized fortune. Someone making 100k a year (decent salary) would have to work 900 years to equal Jimbo's guaranteed amount.

It never fails that some kids see failures as a chance to come in and play right away.

That being said we need some experience so hopefully we go portal heavy.

The biggest and most important recruiting effort will be keeping all the guys from the last class on the team, as well as Moose (not including the 4 true fish that are suspended that I fully expect to all of them to hit the portal).

Jimbo is in a very precarious situation that could look fine now but be dramatically different 24-48 hours after the lsu game with very little time to react and backfill prior to (early) signing day.
